The latest report shows that Karl Rove?s Republican superPAC American Crossroads?was getting?a gusher of campaign cash right up to the end of what would become?a disasterous Election Day for Rove & company. Texas billionaires were well represented in the final days.?The PAC reported receiving?$37 million and spending?$42 from October 18 and November 26. The big money was a last payday to the PAC, which Rove was publicly promising?would help unseat President Obama and a host of Democrats in Congress. As it turned out, Rove was wrong. According to the Sunlight Foundation, virtually every American Crossroads-backed candidate lost. The foundation said Rove?s group saw only a 1 percent return on its investment. All told, the Rove-backed Crossroads groups ? American Crossroads (which reports its donors) and Crossroads GPS (which doesn?t) spent more than $300 million on behalf of Mitt Romney and the GOP.
The final round of pre-election givers included?$11.5 million from Las Vegas casino owner Sheldon Adelson?and $4 billion from?Dallas industrialist Harold Simmons, $1 million from?Curves Inc. chairman Gary Heavin of Dallas, $1 million from Houston Texans owner Robert McNair, $1 million from Houston homebuilder Bob Perry and $1 million from Dallas hotel owner Robert Rowling. On election night, Rove briefly balked on-air at Fox News when the cable channel?called the race for Obama. He reportedly has been benched, at least for the time being, by Fox chief Roger Ailes.
Meanwhile, the big Democratic superPAC Priorities USA ACtion reported raising $15 million during the same period for the president?s reelection.?Its biggest Texas donor is Houston lawyer Steve Mostyn with $1.5 million. Mostyn made his money suing insurance companies in hurricane cases.
