HBT: Rays' Longoria exits with foot injury

Rays third baseman Evan Longoria was taken out before the start of the top of the third inning of tonight?s game against the Tigers. The Tampa Bay Times reports Longoria re-aggravated the plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He will be reevaluated tomorrow. Kelly Johnson replaced him at the hot corner.

Longoria missed more than three months last year due to a strained left hamstring, so another injury is the last thing the Rays want to hear right now, especially with the season he is having. The 27-year-old has a .920 OPS and racked up 3.6 WAR already, the sixth-most in the American League, per Baseball Reference.

Fears of unrest in Egypt as mass protests pit neighbor against neighbor

As Egypt approaches a weekend of confrontation, the divide between those who love and those who despise President Mohammed Morsi and his pro-Islamist government is wider than ever. NBC's Charlene Gubash reports.

By Charlene Gubash and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

Egypt risks sliding into civil war, the country?s leading religious authority warned Friday, as the nation braced itself for mass nationwide protests.

Organizers of ?June 30? demonstrations -- which mark one year since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi's election -- claim they have the backing of an estimated 15 million Egyptians who want him to resign.

?Only God knows what will happen [on Sunday],? said Gamal Abdul Aziz, a pro-Morsi car mechanic in Madba?a, a blue-collar district in Cairo.

NBC News

Gamal Abdul Aziz, left, a pro-Morsi car mechanic, argues with anti-Morsi computer science student Mohamed Abdul Munim, right, while being interviewed this week.

Building on discontent about a range of social and economic issues, Morsi?s opponents hope to force early presidential elections.

His supporters, meanwhile, have promised they will also take to the streets to defend the Muslim Brotherhood-backed government.

?Vigilance is required to ensure we do not slide into civil war,? clerics of the Al-Azhar institute said in a statement broadly supportive of Morsi, Reuters reported.

It blamed ?criminal gangs? who besieged mosques for street violence which the Brotherhood said has killed five of its supporters in a week.

There were ominous signs on Friday. A Health Ministry source told Reuters that at least 36 people were wounded when hundreds scuffled outside a local office of the Muslim Brotherhood.

A Reuters reporter saw about a dozen men break off from an anti-Morsi march on the seafront to throw rocks at the building's guards. They responded and bricks and bottles flew. Gunshots were also heard.

In an example of just how polarized the debate over Egypt?s future has become, Aziz and his family became embroiled in a shouting match with a nearby resident, anti-Morsi computer science student Mohamed Abdul Munim, 23, while being interviewed this week.

Amr Nabil / AP

Egyptian drivers wait outside in long lines at a gasoline station in Cairo on Tuesday.

The argument, which took place after NBC News filmed a political discussion between the two, ended when Munim stormed off.

The dispute and recent violence -- one man was shot dead and four wounded in an attack on a Muslim Brotherhood office on Thursday -- was an ill omen for Sunday?s marches that will be held a year to the day after Morsi became Egypt's first freely elected leader.

The country's powerful army, which helped protesters topple Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian regime in 2011, has reinforced its presence in cities like Cairo and Port Said.

Munim said he believed ?most? of Egypt?s registered 50 million voters will be out on the streets, supporting one side or the other.

?We are sure that we will go out and get beaten up by the [Muslim] Brotherhood [but] we are going out despite this," he said. ?There is no security, there is economic collapse, the electricity cuts off and everybody is suffering. They will say Morsi is not at fault, but electricity didn?t cut off when the military governed.?

Aziz, meanwhile, said his life had improved under Morsi, and accused the mostly-secular opposition of ?waging a war against Islam.?

?Can you build a house in a day? No, it takes time. What can a president do in one year when a country is in ruins? The old [Mubarak] regime stole the country and left it destroyed.?

In a sign of the nervousness many felt, Egyptians were stocking up on food, fuel, water and cash in the days leading up the protests.

The Daily Show's Jon Stewart took his satire to Cairo Friday, appearing on a show hosted by the man known as "Egypt's Jon Stewart" and who has faced investigation for insulting the country's president and Islam. "If your regime is not strong enough to handle a joke then you don't have a regime," said Stewart. TODAY's Jenna Wolfe reports.

Morsi?s supporters claim the demonstration? organized?by an opposition umbrella group named "Tamarod," meaning "Rebel"?? is setting the stage for a repeat of the 2011 Arab Spring revolution.

Mahmoud Badr, a 28-year-old journalist and founder of the Tamarod movement, dismissed a televised speech by Morsi on Wednesday night in which the president appealed for calm.

"Our demand was early presidential elections and since that was not addressed anywhere in the speech then our response will be on the streets on [Sunday]," he told the?English-language Egypt Independent news site.?

The U.S.?Embassy announced Tuesday it would be closing its doors for the day of the demonstrations, but added that ?potentially violent protest activity may occur before June 30,? and urged U.S. citizens to ?maintain a low profile? from Friday onwards.

Underscoring fears of violence, defenders of Morsi on Tuesday revealed plans to form vigilante groups to protect public buildings from opposition demonstrations, the Egypt Independent reported, quoting Safwat Abdel Ghany, a member of Islamic umbrella organization Jama'a al-Islamiya.?

?If chaos sweeps across the country, Islamist groups will secure state institutions and vital facilities against robbery by thugs and advocates of violence," he was quoted as saying.

Members of Tamarod were so confident that they?would force Morsi from power that the organization set out a constitutional ?road map? that it said would take Egypt forward without a president until new elections.

Eric Trager, fellow at the Washington Institute think tank, said this week that battle lines were drawn between ?an enraged opposition? and ?an utterly incapable, confrontational ruling party that now counts some of Egypt's most violent political elements as its core supporters.?

?Rising food prices, hours-long fuel lines, and multiple-times-daily electricity cuts -- all worsening amidst a typically scorching Egyptian summer -- have set many Egyptians on edge, with clashes between Brotherhood and anti-Brotherhood activists now a common feature of Egyptian political life," he said.

?Whatever happens on [Sunday], it can't end well,? he added.

Reuters contributed to this report.

(AP) ? Michael Jackson's eldest son testified Wednesday that his father was excited about going back on tour before his death but wasn't happy about the terms of the ill-fated shows.

Prince Jackson told jurors his father wanted more time to rehearse and had several tense phone conversations with promoters of his "This Is It" shows that sometimes ended with his father in tears.

The 16-year-old said his father remarked after one of the conversations, "'They're going to kill me.'" He did not elaborate.

The testimony came in a lawsuit claiming AEG negligently hired Conrad Murray, the doctor who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter for giving Jackson an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.

AEG denies it hired the physician or bears any responsibility for the entertainer's death.

Prince testified that he saw AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips at the family's rented mansion in a heated conversation with Murray in the days before his father died. The teenager said he saw Phillips grabbing Murray's elbow.

Phillips "looked aggressive to me," Prince testified.

Michael Jackson wasn't at home at the time and was probably at rehearsals, Prince said.

For the first time, the teenage publicly provided details about the day his father died. Prince testified that he saw Murray performing CPR on his father, who was hanging halfway off a bed. It appeared his dad's eyes were rolled up in the back of his head, Prince told jurors.

Prince's eyes appeared red as he recalled being told by Murray at a hospital that his father was dead.

The testimony began with the teenager showing jurors roughly 15 minutes of private family photos and home videos.

He described growing up on Neverland Ranch and showed the panel videos of the property's petting zoos and other amenities. After his father's acquittal of child molestation charges, Prince described living in the Middle East, Ireland and Las Vegas.

He told the jury that his father was always working, but his children had no idea he was a global superstar.

"We always listened to his music, but we never knew how famous he was," Prince said.

He said he and his sister Paris watched a video of one of their father's performances and got a sense of his fame when overwhelmed fans were carried from his shows on stretchers.

Prince is the first Jackson family member to testify during the trial, now in its ninth week. Attorneys have said TJ Jackson, who serves a co-guardian to Prince and his siblings, and Taj Jackson, are also expected to take the witness stand. They are the sons of Tito Jackson.

Prince Jackson, his sister Paris and brother Blanket are plaintiffs in the case against AEG, which their grandmother and primary caretaker filed in August 2010.

In court, Prince wore a black suit with a dark grey tie with his long brown hair tucked behind his ears. He spoke softly as he began testifying, and the first exhibit shown to jurors was a photo taken with their grandmother on his and Paris' first day of school.

He described his school life, including taking a summer course in U.S. history, participating on the school's robotics team and volunteer work.

Another image shown to jurors was Michael Jackson playing piano with his son while Prince was still an infant or toddler.

Plaintiffs' attorney Brian Panish asked Prince whether he was interested in pursuing a career in music.

"I can never play an instrument and I definitely cannot sing," Prince said to laughter from the jury.

He said he wanted to study film or business when he goes to college.

Prince said he helped attorneys pick out the videos and photos shown in court.

Michael Jackson sheltered his children from the public eye while he was alive, often obscuring their faces while out in public. The children have been more public in recent years, appearing at a star-studded memorial service and other events honoring their father.

Paris, 15, had also been expected to testify during the case but was hospitalized last month and her status as a witness remained unclear. Attorneys for AEG played a snippet of her videotaped deposition last week, and more of her testimony may be played for the jury later in the trial.

Blanket, 11, is not expected to testify.

The jury of six men and six women has learned numerous details about Jackson's role as a father during the case. They've heard about a secret trip to a movie weeks before Michael Jackson's death, a private circus he hired for Paris' 11th birthday, and Blanket's interest in his father's dance rehearsals.

The trial is expected to last several more weeks.

Halle Berry to testify on Calif. paparazzi bill

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Actress Halle Berry is scheduled to testify on Tuesday in favor of California legislation that would limit the ability of paparazzi to photograph the children of celebrities.

The hearing before the Assembly Committee on Public Safety is set for midmorning, although it's not clear exactly when Berry is expected to speak.

Berry has tangled with paparazzi. In April, she shouted and cursed at photographers at Los Angeles International Airport, telling them to get away from her young daughter, the Los Angeles Times reported (http://lat.ms/14mCKMV ).

The bill by state Sen. Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, would change the definition of harassment to include photographing or recording a child without the permission of a legal guardian, by following the child or guardian's activities or by lying in wait.

It also increases the penalties for people convicted of such behavior. The first conviction would require imprisonment of at least 10 days, up from the current five days.

The goal is also to protect the children of public officials, including judges and law enforcement, said Greg Hayes, spokesman for the senator.

Opponents, including The Motion Picture Association of America, said it infringes on free speech.

Jim Ewert, general counsel for the California Newspaper Publishers Association, told the Times the bill could criminalize legitimate news gathering.

"It's what journalists do," he said. "They take pictures."

A formation mechanism of nanocrystalline cerium dioxide (CeO2), a versatile nanomaterial, has been unveiled by scientists from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. The research results were published in the scientific journal Chemistry A European Journal (DOI: 10.1002/chem.201204101). This finding potentially simplifies and alleviates the existing synthetic processes of nanocrystalline CeO2 production.

Nanocrystalline CeO2 particles are widely used, for example, in catalysts for hazardous gas treatment, in electrodes for solid oxide fuel cells, in polishing materials for advanced integrated circuits, in sunscreen cosmetics, and in such medical applications as artificial superoxide dismutase. Current industrial syntheses of nanocrystalline CeO2 are based on sol-gel processes followed by thermal treatment and/or the addition of accelerant reagents. Any further improvement of the synthetic strategy for CeO2 nanocrystals requires a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in their formation at the atomic scale.

Dr. Atsushi Ikeda-Ohno from the University of New South Wales, Australia, together with Dr. Christoph Hennig from the HZDR opted for a sophisticated multi-spectroscopic approach that combines dynamic light scattering and synchrotron-based X-ray techniques. These complex investigations involved the use of two world-leading synchrotron facilities of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, and SPring-8 in Hyogo, Japan.

Live Monitoring

For the first time ever, the scientists were able to perform an in-situ observation of nanocrystal evolution. So far, little has been known of the formation mechanism of metal nanocrystals; mainly because appropriate analytical techniques were lacking. The most widely used techniques for metal nanocrystal research are electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. They are powerful enough to visualize the appearance of nanocrystals and to acquire their lattice information, but they are not applicable to the solution state where the evolution of metal nanocrystals occurs. "To probe the formation of nanocrystalline CeO2 in an aqueous solution, we combined different spectroscopic techniques, including dynamic light scattering, synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and high energy X-ray scattering," says Dr. Atsushi Ikeda-Ohno.

The information the researchers obtained is fundamental to simplifying and alleviating the synthetic process of CeO2 nanocrystals. They revealed that uniformly sized nanoparticles of CeO2 can be produced simply by pH adjustment of tetravalent cerium (Ce(IV)) in an aqueous solution without subsequent physical/chemical treatment such as heating or adding accelerant chemicals. The produced CeO2 crystals have a uniform particle size of 2 - 3 nanometers, irrespective of the preparation conditions (e.g. pH and type of pH adjustment). This particle size is exactly in the range which is interesting for industrial applications. A key finding is that mononuclear Ce(IV) solution species do not result in nano-sized CeO2 crystals. The prerequisite is the presence of oligomeric Ce(IV) solution species, such as dimers or trimers.

"We're indeed very glad that our multi-spectroscopic approach is also applicable to any other research on metal nanocrystals. That's why this study contributes to an emerging research area on metal nanocrystals in a broader context," says Dr. Christoph Hennig. "And the HZDR's own measuring station at the ESRF provides the best possible opportunities for this research area of metal nanocrystals which directly contributes to industrial applications."

New study finds Colorectal cancer treatment can be achieved ...

(PR NewsChannel) / June 25, 2013 / WEST BABYLON, N.Y. ?

Delta LabsA remarkable new study out of the University of Colorado has found a surprisingly effective treatment for colorectal cancer: grape seed extract.

Effectively targeting cancer cells without affecting healthy cells, researchers from the University of Colorado Cancer Center have discovered that grape seed extract is extraordinarily valuable in inhibiting the growth of colorectal cancer cells.

Interestingly, researchers have determined that the more advanced the colorectal cancer cells are, the more grape seed extract stops their growth and survival.

Scientists believe grape seed extract?s effectiveness is derived from the antioxidant?s employment of oxidative stress to cancer cells which results in cell death.

Due to increased colorectal cancer rates stemming from sedentary lifestyles and high fat diets, researchers note because of lack of screening over 60% of those diagnosed already have advanced stages of the disease.

?While we?ve known grape seed extracts? positive effects on cancer cells and Alzheimer?s disease, it?s shocking to see the true extent of its cancer fighting powers,? said Debbie Morgan, president of Delta Labs. ?We?re proud to know that our Resveratrol formula benefits customers in another potentially life-changing way.?

Snowden May Be Both A Hero And A Traitor - Business Insider

edward snowden

Altered screenshot

Americans are split on whether the leaks of classified National Security Agency (NSA) documents by ex-Booz Allen employee Edward Snowden is serving public interest or simply spilling U.S. secrets.

The answer is both.

On the one hand, the 30-year-old NSA contractor exposed the first concrete evidence of the NSA's domestic surveillance apparatus when he gave Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald ?thousands? of documents, including a top secret court order compelling Verizon to give the NSA all of the call data in its systems.

The Verizon leak enabled the American Civil Liberties Union, a Verizon customer, to file a lawsuit charging that the NSA's mass collection of metadata violates Americans' constitutional rights of free speech, association, and privacy.

There is a precedent for that charge ? in July the court that oversees NSA spying ruled that the agency's domestic dragnet violated the Fourth Amendment's restriction against unreasonable searches and seizures "on at least one occasion."

The documents have also corroborated claims made by previous whistleblowers, and raise serious questions about the constitutionality of what appears to be a widespread warrantless surveillance with weak oversight.

"As a constitutional matter, the Supreme Court has long held that, where an individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy, search and seizure may occur only once the government has obtained a warrant, supported by probable cause and issued by a judge," Georgetown law professor Laura K. Donohue wrote in the Washington Post. "Americans reasonably expect that their movements, communications and decisions will not be recorded and analyzed by the government" (emphasis added).

Therefore, given that a whistleblower is "a person who informs on someone engaged in an illicit activity," Snowden appears to fit that definition in the case of NSA domestic surveillance practices.

NSA

AP/Rick Bowmer

The NSA's new data center in Bluffdale, Utah

On the other hand, Snowden's?leaks of NSA cyber espionage targeting civilian targets in China don't expose illicit activity, but only methods and targets of America's?premier covert intelligence gathering organization.

Here's what Dr. Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg, an international expert on laws governing cyber conflicts and cyber warfare, told Business Insider:

"All of the targets [Snowden] was referring to [in reference to the NSA hacking China] was either espionage or some other interference with the cyber infrastructure in another state. ... That doesn't mean everything was 'lawful,' but under international law there is no prohibition of espionage."

Dr. von Heinegg noted that if any of the NSA hacks on Chinese universities, hospitals, and private businesses caused damage in real life ? e.g. patients dying ? that would at least be a violation of the prohibition to inflict serious damage on another state (but short of an act of war).

Snowden's leaks to China, along with evidence of cyber espionage by China against the U.S., do reveal a vicious circle of cyber spying between the two countries ? but that's how espionage works.

Dr. von Heinegg explains why this leak by Snowden doesn't amount to whistleblowing:

"Let's be quite clear: Intruding into another state's systems in order to figure out what's in there ? that's simply espionage, everybody's doing it. ... The answer of international law [regarding espionage] is: 'Don't get caught while you're doing it on foreign territory.' That's all."

He added that spying is spying, whether it's a "diplomat" with wigs or rooms full of hackers, and that "only the means are different" from what occurred during the Cold War.

Neverthless,?Snowden told?the?South China Morning Post that he plans?to divulge information to other countries as well:

"If I have time to go through this information, I would like to make it available to journalists in each country to make their own assessment, independent of my bias, as to whether or not the knowledge of US network operations against their people should be published."

Consequently, Snowden's leaks to China suggest?"that his actions aren't motivated by loyalty to his country, but, instead, by a personal view of how the world should work," as Business Insider CEO Henry Blodget wrote recently.

In this way Snowden can be seen as vindictive, un-American, and downright na?ve.

So everybody is right.

Snowden is a whistleblowing hero for providing evidence?of?what is widely considered as an?unnecessary and?unconstitutional?mass surveillance of the American people.

He is also a "kid" (his lawyer's words) who betrayed his country by leaking classified but not necessarily unlawful NSA methods that?could be of great value to a foreign intelligence services who want to better understand the agency's spying capabilities.

Given the clear contradiction, championing one side or another reveals much more about the person making the judgment than it does about Edward Snowden.

Wing walker, pilot die in crash at Ohio air show

CINCINNATI (AP) ? A plane carrying a wing walker crashed at an air show and exploded into flames Saturday, killing the pilot and stunt walker, authorities said.

The crash of the 450 HP Stearman happened at around 12:45 p.m. at the Vectren Air Show near Dayton in front of thousands of horrified spectators. No one else was hurt.

A video posted on WHIO-TV shows the plane turn upside-down as the performer sits on top of the wing. The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, erupting into flames as spectators screamed.

Ian Hoyt, an aviation photographer and licensed pilot from Findlay, was at the show with his girlfriend. He told The Associated Press he was taking photos as the plane passed by and had just raised his camera to take another shot.

"Then I realized they were too low and too slow. And before I knew it, they hit the ground," he said.

He couldn't tell exactly what happened, but it appeared that the plane stalled and didn't have enough air speed, he said. He credited the pilot for steering clear of spectators and potentially saving lives.

"Had he drifted more, I don't know what would have happened," Hoyt said. He said he had been excited to see the show because he'd never seen the scheduled performer ? wing walker Jane Wicker ? in action.

On the video, the announcer narrates as the plane glides through the sky and rolls over while the stuntwoman perches on a wing.

"Now she's still on that far side. Keep an eye on Jane. Keep an eye on Charlie. Watch this! Jane Wicker, sitting on top of the world," the announcer said, right before the plane makes a quick turn and nosedive.

Federal records show that biplane was registered to Wicker, who lived in Loudon, Va. A man who answered the phone at a number listed for Wicker on her website said he had no comment and hung up.

One of the pilots listed on Wicker's website was named Charlie Schwenker. A post on Jane Wicker Airshows' Facebook page announced the deaths of Wicker and Schwenker and asked for prayers for their families.

A message left at a phone listing for Charles Schwenker in Oakton, Va., wasn't immediately returned.

Dayton International Airport spokeswoman Linda Hughes and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston confirmed that a pilot and stunt walker had died but declined to give their names. The air show also declined to release their identities.

The show was canceled for the rest of the day, but organizers said events would resume Sunday and follow the previous schedule and normal operations. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash.

Another spectator, Shawn Warwick of New Knoxville, told the Dayton Daily News that he was watching the flight through binoculars.

"I noticed it was upside-down really close to the ground. She was sitting on the bottom of the plane," he said. "I saw it just go right into the ground and explode."

Thanh Tran, of Fairfield, said he could see a look of concern on the wing walker's face just before the plane went down.

"She looked very scared," he said. "Then the airplane crashed on the ground. After that, it was terrible, man ... very terrible."

Wicker's website says she responded to a classified ad from the Flying Circus Airshow in Bealeton, Va., in 1990, for a wing-walking position, thinking it would be fun. She was a contract employee who worked as a Federal Aviation Administration budget analyst, the FAA said.

She told WDTN-TV in an interview this week that her signature move was hanging underneath the plane's wing by her feet and sitting on the bottom of the airplane while it's upside-down.

"I'm never nervous or scared because I know if I do everything as I usually do, everything's going to be just fine," she told the station.

Wicker wrote on her website that she had never had any close calls.

"What you see us do out there is after an enormous amount of practice and fine tuning, not to mention the airplane goes through microscopic care. It is a managed risk and that is what keeps us alive," she wrote.

In 2011, wing walker Todd Green fell 200 feet to his death at an air show in Michigan while performing a stunt in which he grabbed the skid of a helicopter.

In 2007, veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed at the Dayton show when his biplane slammed into the runway while performing loop-to-loops and caught fire.

Organizers were presenting a trimmed-down show and expected smaller crowds at Dayton after the Air Force Thunderbirds and other military participants pulled out this year because of federal budget cuts.

The air show, one of the country's oldest, usually draws around 70,000 people and has a $3.2 million impact on the local economy. Without military aircraft and support, the show expected attendance to be off 30 percent or more.

(AP) ? Slava Voynov broke his stick in two with a vicious swing at the puck during the second period. The Los Angeles Kings defenseman's slower shot stayed on course anyway, sliding past Corey Crawford into Chicago's net.

The defending Stanley Cup champions have been getting all kinds of breaks during an unbeaten home run through the postseason. They'll need a few more like that to even up the Western Conference finals.

Voynov had a goal and an assist, Jonathan Quick made 19 saves and Los Angeles beat the Blackhawks 3-1 in Game 3 Tuesday night, trimming Chicago's series lead to 2-1.

Justin Williams also scored and Dwight King added an empty-net goal in the defending champions' 15th consecutive home victory since March. Although they can't explain it, the Kings have won all eight of their home playoff games ? nine straight dating to last season's title clincher.

"Honestly, we don't talk about it in here at all," Kings defenseman Robyn Regehr said. "We have a certain way we need to play. For whatever reason, we do a heck of a good job of it at home, and not as good on the road."

Game 4 is Thursday night in Los Angeles.

The Kings never trailed while ending the top-seeded Blackhawks' five-game postseason winning streak, but they had to survive a tense third period with Quick's brilliance and a strong defensive effort, avoiding a nearly insurmountable three-game deficit.

"It's not something we wanted to try and test out, so it was certainly a must-win in our situation," Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi said. "We were just able to be aggressive instead of sitting back and letting them dictate the pace this time. That's what we have to do to compete with those guys."

Jeff Carter had two assists in an inspired effort despite the absence of injured linemate Mike Richards, and Voynov had his fourth multipoint game in a prolific postseason, throwing aside the broken pieces of his stick with a stylish flourish after his goal. The Siberian defenseman's five playoff goals are a franchise playoff record for blueliners, and his four game-winning goals are a club record for all skaters.

Every time the Blackhawks mounted their speedy attack, the Kings survived with solid defense and fortunate bounces ? a combination they've been getting all spring at Staples Center.

Yet after their 16-4 roll through last season's playoffs, not even that home dominance has been easy this year for the Kings, who haven't scored more than two goals without an empty-netter in their last eight games.

"This is kind of what I expected this to be when we did it last year," captain Dustin Brown said. "Last year, we were playing at a level few teams ever play at. This year, it's taking that extra effort out of us, and we're coming up with it."

Bryan Bickell scored and Crawford stopped 25 shots for the Blackhawks, who chased Quick from Game 2 and earned back-to-back home victories to open the series last weekend.

The Kings had lost five of their previous seven playoff games before getting back to friendly Staples Center and their sellout crowd. Quick also returned to Conn Smythe Trophy form in Game 3, highlighted by a dazzling late save on Bickell, while his low-scoring teammates generated just enough offense to hold off the Blackhawks, who hadn't lost since Game 4 of the second round.

"They play a lot better at home," Crawford said. "They were buzzing. They were running around a little bit more than in Chicago, but we were ready for that. We knew they would come harder. We were almost there. We almost tied it."

The Blackhawks matched their playoff low with just 20 shots, but the Presidents' Trophy winners were one good bounce away from tying it in the final minutes.

Brandon Saad nearly had an open net after a cross-ice pass from Viktor Stalberg with 5 minutes left, but couldn't collect the puck. Moments later, Keith missed a near-breakaway at the Kings' blue line when Chicago went offside ? and Quick set off a frenzy in the crowd when he stopped Bickell's fine chance late.

"We knew exactly what kind of game they were going to play, and that they would have more confidence and more energy in their own building," Saad said. "We just didn't bring that same effort and same pace. There were a lot of little thing we could do better, but that comes with our preparation and being ready to play at the highest level. We know we've got to be better than that."

The Kings played their second straight game without Richards, their leading postseason scorer heading into Game 3. The veteran center has an apparent concussion after a big hit from Dave Bolland in the series opener.

Richards' absence opened a lineup spot for promising rookie Tyler Toffoli, who has three points in the last two games. The 21-year-old AHL rookie of the year got the primary assist on Voynov's goal.

After the Kings scored just 11 goals in their previous seven games, coach Darryl Sutter shook up his lines. Slumping center Anze Kopitar was moved back to the third line, while Jarret Stoll moved up to the Kings' nominal top line between Williams and Brown.

Between the line changes and the desperation necessary in such a situation, the Kings came out with a noticeable edge and improved passing. They took the lead just 3:21 in on a strong sequence started and finished by Williams, who forced Nick Leddy's turnover before scoring on a pass from Voynov.

The two-time Stanley Cup winner has six goals in the playoffs ? four in the past six games ? after scoring just 11 in the 48-game regular season.

Los Angeles kept up the pressure in the second period, with Carter and Toffoli generating sustained pressure before Voynov's changeup shot beat Crawford, who was screened.

The Kings got a four-minute power play moments later when defenseman Duncan Keith high-sticked Carter in the face, punctuating a bad-tempered game by opening a gash on Carter's mouth. Sutter thought Keith deserved a match penalty for the nasty play, calling it "retaliation."

But Los Angeles managed just one shot on that scoreless power play, and Bickell got the Blackhawks back in it with his seventh goal of the postseason in the final minute of the second period. Bickell was left untouched behind the net after Kings defensemen Drew Doughty and Regehr both lost their footing, and the pending free agent skated in front alone to beat Quick with just Chicago's third shot of the period.

But the Blackhawks couldn't get another past Quick, who had dominated the first two rounds with the same style that made him the Kings' playoff MVP last year.

The Blackhawks hadn't been at Staples Center since both clubs' season opener Jan. 19, when Chicago spoiled the Kings' banner-raising ceremony with a 5-2 victory.

NOTES: Williams and Chicago RW Patrick Sharp nearly fought early in the game while scuffling for position before a faceoff, but linesmen kept them apart. "He asked me to fight," Sharp said. Retailers report modest gains for May

(AP) ? In the latest sign that Americans are feeling better about the overall economy, stores across the country had a pickup in revenue in May.

An improving job picture, better housing market and stock market rallies have all led to consumer confidence reaching 5-year highs, leaving Americans a bit more likely to reach into their pockets and spend, monthly sales reports from retailers showed Thursday.

Revenue at stores open at least a year ? an industry measure of a store's health because it excludes results from stores recently opened and closed ? rose 3.2 percent in May compared with the same month a year ago, according to a preliminary tally of 12 retailers by the International Council of Shopping Centers.

The increase continues a gradual sales uptick that began in early spring. The measure rose 3 percent in April.

"Some underlying improvement in the U.S. economy along with an improving 'wealth effect' from rising stock and home prices is helping to lift the sales pace," said Michael Niemira, chief economist at the ICSC.

While big chains such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp and Macy's Inc. don't report monthly revenue, the stores that do offer economists a snapshot of consumer spending habits. In total, the retailers that report monthly data represent about 6 percent of the $2.4 trillion in U.S. retail industry sales.

Among the best performers were Costco Wholesale Corp., which reported revenue in stores open at least one year rose 5 percent, though that fell slightly short of analyst expectations of a 5.5 percent rise. The measure rose 6 percent excluding changes in gas prices and the stronger dollar.

Discount department store operator SteinMart had surprisingly strong results, with the measure up 8.2 percent, far above the 2 percent that was expected. Ladies' casual and career sportswear were also among its best categories for the month.

L Brands Inc., which operates Victoria's Secret and Bath and BodyWorks and was formerly known as Limited Brands, said the figure rose 3 percent, slightly below analyst expectations of a 3.2 percent increase.

The reports came as the Labor Department said Thursday that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell 11,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 346,000, a level consistent with steady job growth. Meanwhile, the stock market has been on a rally, rising every month this year and climbing to record levels this spring, although there has been some pullback in June. And housing prices rose 11 percent in March, the sharpest 12-month increase in 7 years.

But despite the positive news about the economy, analysts expect modest but steady gradual growth rather than any significant spending uptick that we may have seen a decade ago.

"We're not seeing higher gains like we saw in the mid-2000s when the real estate market was on the rise," said Ken Perkins, president of research firm Retail Metrics LLC. "So many consumers still have homes underwater and are still playing catch up."

The Team Behind Ngmoco Raises $12M For N3twork, A Re-Imagined Way Of Browsing Mobile Content

Screen Shot 2013-06-05 at 8.09.15 PMThe team that sold early mobile gaming company Ngmoco to DeNA for up to $400 million is back at the grind again. They’ve raised $12 million to re-imagine how people consume mobile content around their personal interests. Again, not only are we seeing the same cast of founders including Ngmoco co-founders Neil Young, Bob Stevenson and Alan Yu, we’re also seeing the same investors. Kleiner Perkins, which backed Ngmoco out of its original iPhone-focused iFund, Google Ventures and Mike Maples’ Floodgate are all back in for this new company. The big difference is that Young and his team aren’t doing gaming. Like many other teams that came out of the social gaming era, they’re moving onto other types of consumer products. “I’m not sure it’s smart of anyone to start a gaming company right now,” Young said. “It’s a particularly challenging environment. Incumbents have reached enough scale or a good enough understanding of how to monetize that it becomes really difficult to be competitive.” Indeed, even the biggest companies like EA and Zynga have shed roughly 1,500 jobs this year as they grapple with a massive platform shift toward Android and iOS. That said, Young said he picked up a lot of know-how that could be put to use in other consumer-facing mobile apps. “You can look at the gaming business. People ask us if it’s a technical business or a creative business,” Young said. “We’ve always thought of it as a human psychology business. There are a lot of things that you learn while designing games and what motivates people.” He said he and his team were attracted to try something totally new — outside of their traditional realm of gaming experience. “For our next adventure, we wanted to build on the power of interests,” Young said. “We’re going to try to re-imagine the presentation layer of the Internet.” He added, “The way the web has been structured — it’s an Internet of pages and places and it’s borne out of technical documentation project. The problem though is that you end up with 20 browser windows, and explore those interests as open apps or web pages. There’s all these really disparate pieces of information and data.” In the process, they picked up another co-founder Erik Lammerding, who has been a senior manager for worldwide developer relations with Apple. That vision sounds like a tall order. Without offering too many
