Nokia Pledges Allegiance To Windows RT With The $499 Lumia 2520 Tablet

Microsoft is dead-set on keeping Windows RT with devices like the Surface 2, but now that it’s committed to shelling out $7.2 billion for Nokia’s devices business the folks in Redmond have yet another source of hardware know-how to tap. Perhaps the earliest fruit of that reinforced partnership is the $499 Lumia 2520, Nokia’s newest tablet and its first to run Windows RT.

As a slew of leaks have already suggested, the 2520 doesn’t stray too far from the existing Lumia smartphone formula. The trademark polycarbonate Lumia body has been carried over, and it with comes much of the same design language — think gently curving midsections and tapered edges. Meanwhile, the whole shebang is powered by the same 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 we saw in the Lumia 1520.

But of course, there’s one thing you’ll probably notice before all of that. Nokia has outfitted the Lumia 2520 with a 10.1-inch IPS LCD panel that runs at 1080p and is swathed in Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2. Some of Nokia’s mobile DNA has carried over into this tablet too: unlike what other companies have done, all Lumia 2520s will ship with LTE radios for mobile connectivity… whether or not their owners choose to fire up them is another question entirely.

But RT? Really? The platform has been critically derided, and at this point nearly every OEM of note save for Microsoft itself has publicly moved away from it. Considering its tight (and now tighter) relationship with Microsoft, it’s perhaps no surprise that Nokia is finally getting roped into building RT hardware. Thankfully, in typical Nokia fashion, the resulting device is as consumer-friendly a Windows RT tablet as I’ve ever seen.

I got the chance to play with the Lumia 2520 in New York while Ifi Majid (Nokia’s head of North American marketing) looked on, and one thing is for sure — the Lumia formula feels just right when applied to tablets. The Surface’s angular design and metallic chassis seemed tailor-made to evoke feelings of mechanical awe, but the 2520 is its friendlier, more colorful counterpart.

The 2520 is impressive on a technical level, too. The display is plenty crisp, and it’s capable of showing off Windows RT’s myriad colors without getting too lurid and in-your-face — its great viewing angles were only icing on the cake. And swiping through the start screen and firing up apps was as snappy as you’d expect considering the chipset running the show. If you’re an RT devotee (there’s bound to be a few of them, right?), make it a point to play with one. I suspect you’ll find a lot to like.

But can this be the sort of crossover device that Nokia and Microsoft really need? Nokia’s unveiling comes hours before Apple is set to show off some new iPads, and at this point there’s little question which device people will flock to more. With the Lumia 2520 though, Nokia seems intent on fighting Windows RT’s perception problem — Majid noted to me that if RT was originally positioned as a strong competitor to the iOS than as a me-too kid sibling of Windows 8, things may have turned out very differently.

Maybe the Lumia 2520 will be the device to finally turn things around for RT. Maybe it won’t. Either way, it seems clear that RT isn’t dead just yet.

This is a developing story, please refresh for updates.

Plane fighting Australia fires crashes as cooler weather eases threat

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A plane dousing wildfires in bushland around the Australia's biggest city, Sydney, crashed into a national park on Thursday, sparking a new fire to add to 55 still burning across the state of New South Wales.

The accident happened as the immediate threat from the fires eased thanks to cooler weather, but the Rural Fire Service (RFS) warned of hot and dry weather ahead as summer hits its peak.

"It's hard to definitely say that (the worst is over) at this stage," said RFS spokeswoman Natalie Sanders. "We have got cooler temperatures today and the winds are slightly lower but with these fires still going, it's hard to say how long they'll go for and whether there will be any further damage."

More than 200 homes have been destroyed in New South Wales since last Thursday, when fires tore through Sydney's outskirts, razing entire streets. One man died from a heart attack while trying to save his home.

The RFS said it held "grave concerns" for the pilot of a water bomber fixed-wing aircraft that crashed in the Budawang National Park, 270 km (170 miles) southwest of Sydney, a wilderness area of steep mountainsides and forests popular with hikers and campers.

Sanders said 20 of the 55 fires still burning on Thursday had yet to be contained by firefighters, who fear strong winds may see three major fires in the Blue Mountains commuter district west of Sydney join up in coming days, creating one massive wildfire.

The fires have so far burned through more than 120,000 hectares (300,000 acres) and have a perimeter of some 1,600 km (990 miles).

Police have arrested several children suspected of starting fires. Other fires were sparked by power lines arcing in strong winds, according to the RFS.

HK police: 2nd extortion try on 'Transformers' set

(AP) — Police are investigating a second reported extortion attempt at the Hong Kong film set of the latest "Transformers" movie, authorities say. .

A government statement received overnight said a production company crew member was setting up on the roof of a building in Kowloon on Tuesday when four men "intimidated her and asked for money."

She called police, who arrested a 35-year-old man. He's being held pending further inquiries. The three others are still wanted. The case has been classified as blackmail and a police anti-triad unit is investigating.

Triads are Chinese organized crime gangs.

Police arrested two brothers last week after director Michael Bay was assaulted at another filming location. They allegedly demanded 100,000 Hong Kong dollars ($13,000).

"Transformers 4: Age of Extinction" is set for release in June 2014. It's partly set in Hong Kong, where filming involving stars including Mark Wahlberg has attracted attention.

Non-violent attempts at extortion involving location filming have been an occasional problem for Hollywood over the years. They usually involve residents disrupting filming by making noise or other means in an effort to prompt a payoff. In recent years, studios have been more diligent with compensation to residents in neighborhoods where films are shot.

Secrets and lies: A coding cover-up

Have you ever felt like you were stuck in another dimension? One week of my career was like that, when I put in a short stint on a job that was full of unanswered questions.

On a crisp fall Monday, I arrived for my first day on the new job. In HR, I filled out the usual forms, was introduced to the timekeeping system, listened to explanations of health care plans and the company 401(k), and watched a video about this amazing, fast-growing contractor. Yes, this would be a great company to work for.

After lunch, I reported back to HR as instructed. Someone was waiting for me -- but it wasn't the hiring manager who had interviewed me. HR introduced me to "Phil," another manager. I was told that Phil had requisitioned me for an emergency assignment. I would help him out for two or three weeks, then join the department I'd been hired for.

Phil briefed me on the nature of the new task, which sounded challenging and engaging. My new company had won a support contract away from a competitor, and we needed to prep an office on the client's site as soon as possible so that they could fill out their staff for two dozen available positions. My job was to assess the condition of computers, files, software tools, and security. I was sent home and told to report to the client site the next morning.

All is not what it seems
It sounded straightforward, but Tuesday brought a string of strange experiences. First of all, I had trouble getting into the building because the receptionist didn't know to expect me and Phil wasn't around. Finally, after a couple of phone calls and half an hour of waiting, I was given a badge and sent upstairs.

The next sight that greeted me didn't bode well, either. The previous contractor had dedicated a large open room to its operations. About 20 workstations adorned this stark space. It looked deserted, as if an alien mothership had abducted all the people, leaving behind their artifacts: open books, stacks of papers, folders of reports, and three-ring binders. Notably, there were no disks anywhere. In fact, there was no media at all except a few DATs stacked up on one of the desks. I got an eerie feeling about the situation but soldiered on, introducing myself to the one person who was in the room. He turned out to be "Harry," another one of Phil's employees.

We had a brief conversation to help me get oriented. I'd expected to meet Phil there and get my assignment, but Harry said he had no idea when or if the boss would show up. He pointed to a cluster of workstations along one side of the room and recommended I dig in, take inventory, and start recording my findings.

I did so, even as my uneasiness continued to grow. As I began reverse-engineering years of the client's work, I felt like an archaeologist on a dig. What lost civilization was here? How were these pyramids built?

By the end of the day, I had documented four workstations. I understood how to recompile everything the client had been working on and had a written inventory to add to the one occupying Harry's time. Harry had made his way through another three or four workstations. Neither of us had heard from Phil.

Kelly Clarkson Shares Video From Her Top-Secret Wedding

We weren't expecting many details about Kelly Clarkson's wedding, and for good reason. Like some other privacy-loving celebrities, Clarkson and her fiancee, music manager Brandon Blackstock, chose to scrap their grandiose wedding extravaganza. "We sent out the save the date to everyone," Clarkson told People back in August. "And then it got crazy, and all the details were leaking." So the couple sent out another card, which said: "Thank you so much for understanding, but it's just going to be me and Brandon and his two kids and the minister."

Grangemouth plant shut in blow to Scottish economy

By Simon Falush and Sarah Young

LONDON (Reuters) - Scotland's economy suffered a blow on Wednesday when the owner of the Grangemouth site shut the petrochemical plant and threatened to close the adjoining refinery, putting 1,400 jobs at risk.

Swiss owner Ineos halted production last week at the 210,000-barrels-per-day refinery, which provides most of Scotland's fuel, due to a labour dispute with Britain's largest union, Unite. Ineos says the site makes a loss.

The decision to close the petrochemical plant comes despite the protestations of Prime Minister David Cameron, who had called on all sides to continue talks. The move is also a setback for the Scottish National Party, which is leading the campaign for Scotland to become independent.

On the banks of the Firth of Forth estuary in east Scotland, Grangemouth is one of only seven refineries left in Britain and is the biggest industrial site in Scotland. Around 1,400 staff work at the 7-square-kilometre (2.7-square-mile) site, with 800 of those employed at the chemical plant.

Opened in 1924, it accounts for around 8 percent of Scotland's manufacturing industry, according to David Bell, a professor of economics at Stirling University.

Ineos said liquidators would be appointed within a week for the petrochemical plant and it would now decide whether to restart the refinery, which would be dependent on the removal of the threat of further industrial action.

WORST FEARS

"This is the outcome that matches our worst fears," Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond said, adding that the Scottish government was trying to find a buyer.

"The Scottish government strongly believes the site has a positive future and we will continue to work with the UK government and all other parties concerned to find a solution that supports the workers affected and the wider Scottish economy."

Stirling's Bell said the shutdown of the petrochemicals plant would be the "heaviest blow" for Scotland since the disappearance of a number of electronics companies collectively known as Silicon Glen in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The Trades Union Congress, an umbrella group for British unions, condemned Ineos's actions.

"This is a savage blow to the Grangemouth workforce and the wider Scottish economy. This is irresponsible capitalism at its worst," Frances O'Grady, the TUC's general secretary, said.

"The government always has contingency plans when workers go on strike. Now ministers need to show they are as well prepared when owners go on permanent strike."

Talks took place with the company on Wednesday morning and would continue during the day, Pat Rafferty, Scottish secretary of Unite, said.

"We have made further proposals in a last-ditch effort to stave off these catastrophic job losses, which we believe are tantamount to economic and industrial vandalism," Rafferty said.

Scotland will vote on whether to become independent in a referendum in September next year. Many Scots polled on the issue have said their biggest concern will be the likely impact a separation would have on the economy.

Ed Davey, Britain's energy minister, said he stood ready to help with discussions between the management and the union.

The refinery moved closer to permanent closure on Monday this week after a clear majority of union workers rejected a plan that would have cut pensions and benefits.

PetroChina owns 49.9 percent of the refinery. Ineos operates the site and fully owns the attached petrochemical plant.

"We hope a consensus can be reached between Ineos, the ... union and other parties involved," PetroChina said in a statement.

Grangemouth could be the latest in a line of refinery casualties, including Coryton in Britain - victims of competition from Asia and the Middle East, and falling demand for gasoline in Europe.

Grangemouth also powers BP's Kinneil terminal, which processes North Sea crude oil coming ashore via the Forties Pipeline System, a grade that helps set the benchmark for global oil prices.

Analysts said the Grangemouth dispute was supporting Brent crude oil prices.

Ineos had begun winding down operations at Grangemouth ahead of a planned strike over the treatment of Unite representative Stephen Deans, who the union said had been victimised by the company.

Unite called off the strike last Wednesday. Ineos, however, carried on with its plant shutdown, saying that unless the threat of industrial action was removed it would not be safe to restart the plant.

Underlying the immediate dispute was a plan by Ineos to cut jobs and pensions at the petrochemical plant, which it had said would have to close unless costs were reduced.
