Childhood Obesity:Prevention,Care | Fitness

Obesity has been an ever increasing problem specially in children. By taking proper care it can be prevented right at the early stage. A Parent has to take care of the habits a child, including the food habits. These habit patterns play an important role in determining a healthy lifestyle of a kid.

The main problem of obesity can begin with the eating habits. The food that we eat can make us or break us. More than the food we eat it is about eating the right amount of food or the right quality of food.

Proper eating habits: Children always fantasize eating the junk food outside. This can be one of the main causes for the children to become obese. The junk food available outside has a lot of calories which makes the kid put on unnecessary weight. By taking proper care of the food their children are eating parents can cut the risk of their child becoming obese by half.

Indulging in physical activities: The second factor that can help in the prevention of obesity in children is to indulge in physical activities. Children can tend to develop the habit of laziness right in the early stages of the childhood. This can carry on into later stages of the their life. Due to inactivity they fail to burn the necessary amount of calories everyday. This can lead to a gradual weight gain which causes obesity.

Make the child indulge in different physical activities such as the games and sports can play a major role in burning the necessary amount of calories and also helps in the maintenance of the fitness of the child.

Healthy lifestyle: A healthy lifestyle is formed by practicing balance between all things. Help the child in balancing all things in his life. Help the kid in having a positive frame of mind related to all things in his life.

Parents play an important role in the habits a child develops. By taking care of the child in every aspect, obesity in children can be cut down drastically.

Shannon with Daughter Moira

Shannon, our former Featured Blogger Editor and current Pinterest pinner, and her husband, Walker, live in the Pacific Northwest with?their two children. Baby Davis, who was born this past?December?and big sister, four-year-old Moira. Shannon and Walker?recently moved to a larger home with?her parents. Due to?Shannon?s mother?s MS, the two-story home she was residing in?was no longer meeting her needs. Together as a family, they strive to practice equally shared parenting.? Shannon and Walker are eager to share?their love of gaming, music, reading, the arts, cars, and geekery with?their two beautiful?children.

What has surprised Shannon the most about being a parent is the struggle that it is. As a nanny for 12 years,?she always knew that parenting would be harder than?caring for someone else?s children, but she didn?t realize exactly how much harder it can be. While much tougher than she imagined, Shannon is grateful for her time as a nanny as she saw firsthand the benefits of natural parenting. ?My experience as a nanny let me see lots of other parenting styles. The children I knew who were raised in the Attachment Parenting style have turned into the happiest and most interesting adults. I also saw first hand the changes that fear- and shame-based parenting can cause in a child.?

Even through the grind of?daily life Shannon is able to appreciate the beauty of her world around her.? She says ?I think?[being a parent]?has made me a better partner. As I become more practiced at honoring my children?s true selves, I find it easier to do so for everyone. I have read much parenting advice that says you should treat your kids the way you would treat an adult, and I really took that to heart in the other direction. If I don?t think it?s appropriate to yell at my child for forgetting to put her clothes in the hamper, maybe I also shouldn?t yell at Walker when he leaves the sponge in the sink.?

Everyone could benefit by taking a page from Shannon?s book which clearly includes making lots of time for her family as well as honouring the bond she and her husband share. As part of their daily routine, at dinner every night?the whole family takes turns talking about?their favorite part of the day. After dinner is bedtime for the kids?while the adults all spend quality time together and relax.

Sometimes, the way to being the best mother and partner that you can be is ensuring that you are taking time to honour and cherish yourself as well, which is clearly something Shannon and Walker work together on. ?On the weekends, we try to make sure there is time together as a family, as well as time alone for Walker and I each. We also take turns sleeping in.?

Shannon?s blog is always insightful, inspiring, creative, and sometimes just downright funny. Always evolving, she started her blog on LiveJournal quite some?time ago. After her daughter was born?she realized?she had more to share with a wider audience then was available on LiveJournal, and she switched to Blogger.?If you randomly click around her blog, you might stumble upon one of the following posts which are among Shannon?s favorite posts.

  • ??Let?s Talk About Diversity,?is one of her favorites because the subject is near and dear to her heart. She feels pride that our world seems to be moving in the direction of more tolerance and that?her children will look back on the way people treated the LGBT community and wonder what we were thinking.
  • This is All New to Me?is a post that every new mother can relate to!? It was written very early in her parenting when?she first realized that people were comparing themselves to other parents favorably and unfavorably.?Over four years and two babies later, Shannon?still agrees with what?she wrote. She notes the only?exception is?that the longer?she parents, the less?she?judges others.
  • Wait, What?? is a wonderfully inspiring post about another topic that is?near and dear to?her heart, size acceptance. Shannon wishes that people could embrace their whole selves, including their body, where ever it is in the size spectrum.

You know you want more Shannon! And you can get it over on?Pineapples & Artichokes!? You can follow her?on Pinterest and Google +?too!??Thank you Shannon, for sharing your journey through parenthood with us! Your blog is always refreshingly honest and inspiring, and it?s a blessing to be able to learn with you through your journey of natural parenting!

The customer service divide: Social Media Vs Telephone | Red ...

I had two experiences this year that has left me concerned about the ethical operations of companies and how they approach customer service. Mainly the type of customer service it seems you receive if you go by the proper channels, and that you receive when you go via a social media channels and start throwing your toys out of the pram.

I?ve not been one to get stung by bad customer service often to have to deal with it; it has mainly been something I have read about, rather than had a personal experience of. I understand there are genuine slip-ups; mistakes happen, things are overlooked or forgotten about. They shouldn?t happen, but they do, and businesses/employees learn by their mistakes.

Both of the following incidents were first dealt with by my girlfriend (who made the orders) using the telephone numbers for customer services, which then led to me complaining via Twitter about their failures, i.e., I started throwing my toys out of the pram.

I don?t want to make a habit of complaining about companies on Twitter, but it frustrates me seeing a company give poor customer service via telephone, and yet suddenly take action when I mention their shortcomings on Twitter. I know social media is a good leveraging tool when a company fails to provide customer service, though it shouldn?t have to be that way.

The Delivery Company

We had ordered some dog food and my girlfriend was at home until the reasonable hour of 4pm waiting for its delivery. Later she received an Email saying that they had tried to deliver but no one was at home. Fair enough, sods law, stay in all day nearly and then they (supposedly) attempt delivery ? no calling card was left, just an email. The problem was the email gave an incorrect 8 digit reference number made up completely of zeros. This was, as you can guess, not being accepted when entered into the automated telephone system or on their website.

With no direct easy way to get hold of the delivery company my girlfriend fired off an email to the dog food supplier. They reported that the delivery company said that one of the two parcels was ?stuck? (their words not mine) and the other one would be delivered the next day ? whilst no one was at home.

So I made my tweet complaining about the error, tagging the delivery company name, and sure enough I had a response asking for details. There was no way to directly communicate with anyone when my girlfriend called by phone, but here was another real human being willing to help out in some form just because I was making a statement on Twitter.

The Florist Company

The girlfriend had ordered flowers for a friend who had an operation soon after giving birth to a baby boy. Thankfully it wasn?t long till she was back home and my girlfriend thought some flowers as a surprise would be nice. We enquired with her partner if the flowers arrived after not hearing from her after a few days and sure enough they hadn?t been delivered.

When my girlfriend rang the company, they confirmed they had not been delivered, and offered her a complementary redelivery or a refund. When she enquired about the ?complementary redelivery? it turned out that they wouldn?t refund her and redeliver, but simply deliver the flowers late that she had paid for! So my girlfriend requested a refund after pointing out that the redelivery was not exactly complementary, and there was my second statement via Twitter of rubbish customer service.

This time I was given a URL by the flower delivery company?s Twitter profile to fill out a form. So I passed the details on even though my girlfriend had already organised a refund. For her troubles they called her and offered to deliver the flowers for free and got back to me on Twitter saying it had been resolved.
Here is what my girlfriend had to say when I forwarded the tweet to her:

?Ha ha that was quick. She was nice on the phone and are going to send flowers to [friend?s name] yay. That is what should have happened in first place though. Twitter complaining is weird.?

Customer service via social media

Yes, complaining on Twitter is weird. Surely a company should always try and do its best to resolve things before it gets to the stage of anyone complaining on Twitter to make things right. By telephoning customer services the issues should have been resolved in the first place.

It?s not like I have a big following of people on Twitter who are interested in flowers, but meanwhile my girlfriend works alongside many women in a NHS laboratory, the exact demographic that they would love to be targeting on social networks. Do they think my girlfriend is recommending their service after they forgot to deliver the flowers, and then offered to just deliver them late without a refund?

Why do companies have this divide between how they treat their customers on the phone and on social media? Having worked a number of years face-to-face in retail with customers, I believe companies should do their best every time so there are no second choices.

Maybe it?s a financial thing; don?t bend over backwards for all customers due to costs of compensating them? That?s a false economy in itself, especially when the business is in the wrong.

Pay attention to social media complaints

What happened about our dog food delivery? We ended up driving to the depot and demanding our box (which they had sat there) because no one rang back to follow-up what was happening ? even after speaking to a person on Twitter. I hazard a guess that they have a major customer service problem that can?t be fixed by social media alone.

Yes, it?s good that your company may be paying attention to social media channels for customer service issues, but it?s only as good as the customer service that you provide in the first place. You need to make sure that you have a system to follow-up that the issue is resolved so it does not slip through the cracks again.

Have you had poor customer service that was then resolved by social media channels? Please leave out using brand names to protect innocent employees who actually do a great job for their employers.

October 25, 2012 at 11:50 AM by AHN ? ?

Raquel Erhard ? Fourth Estate Cooperative Contributor

Federal Way, WA, United States (4E) ? A 59-year-old Washington firefighter, who became the first South King Fire and Rescue to be honored for dying in the line of duty, was also one of the first in the country to receive the recognition for contracting HIV on the job.

The Memorial Pike Pole, which honors Washington state firefighters who died in the line of duty, was brought to South King Fire and Rescue last Monday, with Doug Waller?s name on a ribbon.

Waller, a 24 year veteran with South King Fire and Rescue, died six years after retiring.

Sharon Waller claimed that her husband came to her saying something is wrong, that he is having trouble speaking and writing.

Test results revealed that Waller had Human Immunodeficiency Virus, he died soon after.

It was documented that shortly before his retirement in 2000, Waller aided a profusely bleeding patient infected with acquired immune deficiency syndrome without wearing gloves. But preliminary HIV test came back negative.

The news shocked his fellow firefighters.

Battalion Chief Chuck Kahler said that the question came up, ?when was this contacted??

Assistant Chief Gordie Olson noted that Waller?s exposure had been documented, ?but sat in a file unknown and kind of forgotten until this came up.?

Although it took years, Waller?s death in 2006 was finally declared as a presumptive illness related to his service.

It was reported that his ?line of duty death? recognition not only honors him, but allows his family to receive benefits, and his fellow firefighters to feel more secure.

Kahler emphasized that ?should something like this happen to any of us, we feel better that our families will be taken care of.?

Akin repeatedly arrested at 1985 abortion protests

ST LOUIS (AP) ? Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin was repeatedly arrested during anti-abortion protests in the 1980s, including at least once when police had to carry him away, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Akin, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in the Nov. 6 election, acknowledged last month during a campaign event that that he had been arrested about 25 years ago as part of an anti-abortion protest. But Akin has repeatedly declined to discuss additional details.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on its website Tuesday that its newspaper archives include at least three accounts of Akin being arrested in March and April of 1985 for criminal trespass and resisting arrest at abortion clinics in the St. Louis area. He apparently never was charged.

The St. Louis police department also confirmed in response to an open-records filed by a representative of the liberal advocacy group People For the American Way that Akin was arrested May 9, 1987, but it said records of the arrest were closed under state law because Akin never convicted.

Akin's firm anti-abortion stance gained national attention in the Senate race when he remarked in a mid-August TV interview that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in "legitimate rape." Akin repeatedly apologized and said he was wrong, but Akin has continued to emphasize that he opposes abortion in all instances except rare cases when it is necessary to save the life of the woman.

A video circulating on the Internet in September showed Akin discussing his past involvement in abortion protests during a speech to supporters. He was recorded as saying: "You know, don't tell anybody I'm a jailbird." He explained: "a bunch of us sat in front of these doors and the police gave us a ride to the free hotel for a while, and you know how it goes."

At a Kansas City news conference last month, Akin confirmed he had been arrested about 25 years ago but provided no further details. His campaign said at the time that it would release additional details but never did so.

Asked last Saturday by The Associated Press to elaborate on when and where he was arrested, Akin again declined to do so.

"We're not talking about that at all," Akin told the AP. "It was 25 years ago, and I think it underlines the fact that I stand up for the things I believe and I'm pro-life, and we're just leaving it there."

Akin campaign adviser Rick Tyler said Tuesday that Akin does not dispute the Post-Dispatch account of his arrests but still has nothing more to say.

McCaskill's campaign declined to comment Tuesday about Akin's arrests. McCaskill canceled her campaign events through the rest of the week to be with her critically ill mother, who was in the hospital Tuesday.

The newspaper said it had missed the 1985 arrests in previous searches of its archives because the news stories had listed Akin by his first name, William. Akin went by his middle name, Todd, when he began his political career by running for the state House in 1988. He has continued to go by Todd Akin since winning election to Congress in 2000.

According to the Post-Dispatch archives, a 37-year-old William Akin from Creve Coeur ? whose name and address matches other information about the future lawmaker ? was among a group of protesters arrested on March 15, 1985. The newspapers account said: "Nineteen anti-abortion demonstrators who refused to leave the waiting room of an abortion clinic in the Central West End were carried out by St. Louis police officers."

Three weeks later, another six protesters, including Akin, were arrested at another St. Louis demonstration. "Police had to carry Akin into an elevator," the story said.

On April 5, 1985, Akin was arrested again as one of 10 protesters who were "attempting to block entrances" at the Hope Clinic for Women in Granite City, Ill., according to the paper. One clinic employee told the paper that the protesters caused minor damage and leveled "verbal abuse" at women entering the clinic.

RSS chief asks India to `liberate` Pakistani Kashmir

RSS chief asks India to `liberate` Pakistani Kashmir Nagpur: Virtually advocating a war with Pakistan, the RSS Wednesday urged the government to "liberate" parts of Kashmir held by Islamabad to arrest the growth of terrorism.

Addressing the annual Dassehra rally here, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said terrorism was on a comeback trail because of the government's policies on Jammu and Kashmir over the past decade.

"The areas under Pakistani occupation have to be liberated, discrimination in administrative and developmental matters in the case of Jammu, Leh-Ladakh and Kashmir Valley must end," he said.

RSS chief asks India to `liberate` Pakistani Kashmir

He said Jammu and Kashmir should be brought 'on par' with the rest of the country to create conditions to enable Hindus compelled to flee the Kashmir Valley to return with honour.

Focussing on the eastern parts of India, Bhagwat expressed concern over the "progressive depletion" of the "nationalist Hindu population" due to historical processes.

Despite repeated warnings about infiltration and arms, narcotics and counterfeit currency smuggling into Assam and West Bengal, wrong policies have resulted in grave problems in India's northeast, he said.

The demographic imbalance due to infiltration had rendered the native population into a minority in the northeast, he said, adding the phenomenon was spreading to other parts of India.

"The poisonous brew of separatism and terrorism, growing under the shade of religious conversion on a large scale, again because of weak policies," he said.

With Chinese interference looming large on the northern borders, terrorist groups like Al Qaeda are also attempting to secure a foothold in the region, Bhawat warned.

He urged the government to weed out infiltrators on an urgent basis from all over India and deport them back to their original countries and prepare a National Register of Citizens for all genuine Indian citizens to stop the alarming trend.

RSS chief asks India to `liberate` Pakistani Kashmir

Supporting India's 'Look East Policy', Bhagwat said all countries in the Southeast Asian region shared a common culture and basic values similar to India's.

"The fact that China has entered the arena as a competitor with full force and preparation... Now, China has befriended Pakistan to such an extent that they have given their nuclear technology to Pakistan.

"The consequences of China surging ahead of us to establish such strategic relationship with our immediate neighbours like Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka should be seen from the angle of our national security."

Touching on the Ayodhya issue, Bhagwat advocated a parliamentary legislation to pave the way for the construction of a majestic Ram Temple there.

"However, keeping in mind the Allahabad High Court judgement, ensure that any construction for the sake of Muslims shall be allowed only outside the cultural boundaries of Ayodhya," Bhagwat said.

The RSS chief urged the government to make the living and working conditions better for the armed forces.

Beijing Shakes Up Military Leadership

China reshuffles its top military brass just weeks before a Communist Party leadership change. The WSJ's Jeremy Page explains how much power China's military really has.

BEIJING?Just over two weeks before a Communist Party leadership change, China began a sweeping shuffle of its military top brass that could elevate the status of the air force and navy and determine the political powers of the country's presumptive future leader, Xi Jinping, over the next two years.

A spokesman for China's Defense Ministry said Tuesday that Gen. Ma Xiaotian had been appointed the new air force chief?a post that is almost certain to give him one of the 12 seats on the Central Military Commission, which commands the armed forces, when it is appointed with a new lineup next month.

Reuters

Gen. Ma Xiaotian, saluting Sri Lankan soldiers in December, was promoted ahead of a party congress expected to elevate Xi Jinping.

The spokesman also said Gen. Zhang Yang had been appointed as head of the armed forces' powerful General Political Department?another post that usually comes with a guaranteed seat on the Central Military Commission, known as the CMC.

Gen. Zhang was seen as a dark-horse candidate for the job, according to experts on the Chinese military, and his appointment appears to rule out the promotion to the CMC of two generals who were close to Bo Xilai, the ousted party official whose wife was convicted of murdering a British businessman.

"This suggests a focus on promoting competent, professional soldiers who'll continue the modernization of the military and who are willing to stay out of politics," said Taylor Fravel, a professor of political science and expert on China's military at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The appointments were the first official indications of who is likely to replace the seven or eight CMC members due to retire in a once-a-decade shuffle of the party leadership that kicks off at the 18th Congress, starting Nov. 8, according to military experts and party insiders.

The shuffle comes at a critical point for China's armed forces, which are rapidly developing the air and naval power to challenge U.S. military dominance of Asia, even as the U.S. counters by refocusing its forces on the region, and rebuilding defense ties with Asian allies and partners.

The military succession is also a test of outgoing party chief and President Hu Jintao's commitment to institutionalize a leadership transition process that until a decade ago was often marked by political upheaval, according to party insiders and analysts.

Mr. Hu is due to retire as party chief next month and as president in March. But many party insiders and political analysts expect him to remain for another two years in his military post as chairman of the CMC, as his predecessor, Jiang Zemin, did after stepping down as party chief in 2002.

That would, in effect, clip the wings of Xi Jinping, who is currently vice president and the only civilian vice chairman of the CMC. It would mean Mr. Xi would have to defer to Mr. Hu on defense issues for the next two years and would have less say in promoting generals to the body, according to party insiders.

Getty Images

Xi Jinping, center

Mr. Hu has leaned toward retaining his military post in recent months, partly as a result of the scandal surrounding the ousted Mr. Bo, and partly due to concerns about the continuing political influence of former President Jiang, party insiders and analysts say.

The Bo scandal disrupted the military succession because he cultivated close ties to senior officers, including at least two generals who are both descended from party leaders and were until recently considered favorites for promotion to the next CMC, according to party insiders.

They are Gen. Liu Yuan, the son of a former Chinese president, and Gen. Zhang Haiyang, the son of a former CMC vice chairman. They had both been potential candidates to take over the General Political Department, which oversees ideological education and discipline in the armed forces.

Gen. Zhang Yang is an unexpected but far less controversial choice for that post.

He was previously serving as political commissar of the Guangzhou Military Region, and appears to have always toed the party line, and avoided domestic political disputes, in his public statements.

"The point is that it's not Liu Yuan," said Steve Tsang, professor of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham in Britain.

"This also shows that we're at the stage where they're getting into agreement on the new CMC. What we still don't know is whether Hu Jintao will stay on as its head," he said.

Gen. Ma, the new air force chief, is also an uncontroversial choice. He was previously deputy chief of general staff, and took part in many recent foreign visits, including to the U.S. He was widely expected to be promoted to his new post, according to military analysts.

Among the key issues now for observers of China's military is who will take over from the two uniformed CMC vice chairmen?the most senior military officers in the Communist Party?who both have seats in the Politburo, the party's top 25 leaders.

The two uniformed CMC vice chairmen and the defense minister have usually come from the army in the past, but this year, the navy and the air force could account for two of those three posts?a reflection of China's shifting military priorities, analysts say.

Gen. Ma's predecessor as air force chief, Xu Qiliang, is a leading candidate for a vice chairmanship, while Adm. Wu Shengli, the navy chief, is among the front-runners for defense minister, according to party insiders and military experts.

China's vast military was long dominated by the army and geared toward fighting land wars with its neighbors. But it is now increasingly focused on using air and sea power to defend its territorial claims in waters near its shores, and to protect perceived Chinese national interests in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and beyond.

3 scientists present cutting-edge research and technology in underwater communication, ocean exploration and counter-piracy

How can science help fighting piracy? How are intelligent robots and cooperative networks taking over the underwater world? What's next in ocean exploration? Three scientists from the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (STO-CMRE) will share these concept and more at Science Festival in Genoa. Based in La Spezia, the Centre will participate in the event aiming at increasing general public awareness on cutting-edge research and technology in the maritime domain.

On 31 October, at 11 o'clock, at Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Palazzo Ducale), Dr. John Potter, project leader for communications and networking in the maritime environment, will explain why we need new technologies to connect intelligent robots and submarines into underwater networks in "So you think it's easy to talk underwater? (But why would you want to?)".

On 1 November, at 11 o'clock, at Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Palazzo Ducale), Dr. Ron Kessel, senior scientist on operations research of complex systems, will present the formidable scientific challenges of counterpiracy, in "How scientists help to fight piracy".

On 2 November, at 11 o'clock, at Sala del Minor Consiglio (Palazzo Ducale), Dr. Daniele Cecchi, a CMRE glider pilot, will tell the public how underwater vehicles can fly autonomously to explore the secrets of the ocean, in "Flying the ocean".

Spotlight on foreign policy at final debate

There are 15 days and one presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney and the general election.

While both candidates acknowledge the outcome of the election depends on no more than two dozen swing states, the debate tonight - the third of the campaign season - provides the final opportunity for the candidates to make their case to a national TV audience. Both Obama and Romney spent the weekend behind closed doors preparing.

Two previous debates ? one which President Obama indisputably lost with an uninspired performance and one where he redeemed himself in the eyes of Democratic stalwarts ? have equalized into the same dead heat the campaigns and political experts have long expected. An NBC / Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday had the race tied at 47 percent support for each candidate. President Obama has an edge among women, according to a Wall Street Journal / NBC poll released Sunday. Mitt Romney has the edge among men.

Tune in to ABC News.com tonight at 8 p.m. ET for anchored coverage of the final presidential debate, held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.

On paper, President Obama should hold an edge in a debate focused on foreign policy. He can boast of giving the order for American Special Forces to carry out the operation in Pakistan that killed Osama bin Laden. He brought combat troops out of Iraq, ending the war that had played such a pivotal role in the two previous presidential elections. President Obama surged troops into Afghanistan, where as a candidate in 2008 he said more focus should have been in the first place during the years after 9/11. But he has set a timetable for withdrawing American troops from that country. While Romney has strongly criticized the timetable for being public, he has not made Afghanistan a main topic on the campaign trail and aides have said he would try to stick to a similar schedule for withdrawing American troops.

Read more about the candidates on Afghanistan.

Indeed, while 46 percent of Americans approve of his handling of the economy and 52 percent disapprove, according to the Wall Street Journal / NBC poll released Sunday, 49 percent approve of his foreign policy and fewer, 46 percent, disapprove.

But with a stubbornly difficult economy, this is not an election that anyone thought would hinge on foreign affairs. That is why Republicans chose a former one term governor who has made his main pitch his career as a businessman.

When Romney embarked on a mid-campaign overseas trip this summer, he was attacked by the British press over comments he made about security for the Olympics. A trip that was supposed to showcase Romney's own experience heading the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 instead included the London mayor leading tens of thousands in a chant against him.

Democrats today sought to recall those headlines in framing the debate on talk shows Sunday.

"People want to know that they have a strong, steady hand in the Oval Office. They don't want someone who's reckless and who's been consistently wrong on foreign policy issues as Gov. Romney has," said David Axelrod, a top Obama campaign adviser, on "Meet the Press." "We all remember his 'Dukes of Hazzard' tour of international destinations over the summer where he not only roiled countries that are not as friendly to us but our best ally, Britain. He was wrong on Libya. He was wrong on Iraq."

Democrats have also mocked Romney for referring to Russia in March as the top "geopolitical foe" of the United States. He later explained his position ? that Russia often stands with some of the world's worst actors ? in an op-ed in Foreign Policy magazine.

But there have serious openings for Romney to make a foreign policy argument lately.

Republicans have said the administration was too slow to label the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi as an "act of terror."

President Obama muted that criticism during the town hall debate last week at Hofstra University when he pointed out he had used the phrase "acts of terror" during a speech the day after the attack.

Romney was unprepared for that semantic joust and lost the moment during the televised debate, but his larger point is accurate. It took the White House and the Obama administration two weeks to publicly describe the attack as terrorism even though it is now clear that U.S. officials knew it was a coordinated attack and not an organic uprising within days.

But the Libya attack has become increasingly political. Democrats have argued that Republicans on Capitol Hill investigating the Benghazi attack released classified information. Republicans have said the attack is a symptom of a larger lack of leadership by the White House.

"This is Exhibit A of a failed foreign policy," said Sen. Lindsay Graham on Fox News Sunday. "Al Qaeda is alive and well in Libya, Iraq, Syria and the wars are not receding. And what happened in Benghazi is a case study in failure at every phase, before, during, and after. And what they did after the attack, I think is just absolutely unacceptable. They tried to confuse, delay and deny. Create a narrative this was a spontaneous event when it was not, because the truth of the matter is -- the Benghazi, Libya conflict was a death trap long in the making. And this is failed presidential leadership at its worst."

On Syria, where the strongman President Bashar al Assad has waged war on rebel forces trying to overthrow him, Republicans have criticized the White House for not doing more to arm the opposition, but it is not clear what exactly Romney would do differently. Romney does not support U.S. involvement in enforcement and a no-fly zone to restrict the Syrian government.

Romney has been vocal in accusing the president of not being close enough to Israel or tough enough with Iran, which continues to pursue a nuclear program despite harsh international sanctions. News reports Sunday of the possibility of one-on-one talks between the U.S. and Iran could add a new element to the debate. The White House denied the report and Romney would not say Sunday if he would support bilateral talks.

Israel and Iran are sticky subjects in American politics. Both candidates, for instance, say that they will not tolerate a nuclear-armed Israel. And in Florida - the key swing state where tonight's debate will take place - the issue of support for Israel carries outsized importance due to a large Jewish population. Earlier this summer, Obama signed a bill renewing U.S. military support for Israel on the eve of Romney's trip there after his stop at the London Olympics.

Other subjects to watch for tonight: China and U.S. defense spending.

Romney has said he would work to declare China a currency manipulator if he is elected. President Obama's approach to China, one of the top holders of U.S. debt, has been more diplomatic. But his campaign has tried to argue that Romney's former company, Bain Capital, helped companies outsource jobs there. There is scant evidence that Romney was involved in those efforts.

While Romney wants to cut U.S. domestic spending, on defense he has suggested increased spending, particularly on the Navy, which he says has fallen into disrepair. He would tie defense spending to the Gross Domestic Product, which could create trillions in more spending.

Obama entered into an agreement with congressional Republicans to enact steep budget cuts, including to defense, if they could not reach a deficit reduction deal. That deal failed and when the election is over lawmakers will undoubtedly scramble to find a way to avert the spending cuts. But Democrats generally favor paring back on defense, especially as part of any deal to reduce the deficit.

Crusty foods may worsen heart problems associated with diabetes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A University of Illinois study suggests avoiding cooking methods that produce the kind of crusty bits you'd find on a grilled hamburger, especially if you have diabetes and know you're at increased risk for cardiovascular disease because of your diagnosis.

"We see evidence that cooking methods that create a crust -- think the edge of a brownie or the crispy borders of meats prepared at very high temperatures -- produce advanced glycation end products (AGEs). And AGEs are associated with plaque formation, the kind we see in cardiovascular disease," said Karen Chapman-Novakofski, a U of I professor of nutrition.

For years nutrition experts have advised people with diabetes to bake, broil, or grill their food instead of frying it, she said.

"That's still true, but if you have diabetes, you should know that AGEs -- byproducts of food preparation methods that feature very high, intense, dry heat -- tend to end up on other tissues in the body, causing long-term damage," she added.

If you're fighting this vascular buildup anyway, Chapman-Novakofski thinks that consuming products containing AGEs could worsen the cardiovascular complications of diabetes.

In the U of I study, the scientists compared the 10-day food intake of 65 study participants in two ethnic groups: Mexicans (who have higher rates of diabetes and a greater risk of complications from the disease) and non-Hispanic whites.

"We found that people with higher rates of cardiovascular complications ate more of these glycated products. For each unit increase in AGEs intake, a study participant was 3.7 times more likely to have moderate to high risk for cardiovascular disease," said Claudia Luevano-Contreras, first author of the study.

The study showed that non-Hispanic whites had a higher intake of AGEs, and they consumed more saturated fats. However, the association between AGEs and cardiovascular disease was stronger than for saturated fats and heart disease, she said.

Eating less saturated fat and more fruits, vegetables, and fiber are important for people with diabetes, but this study shows that food preparation may be important too, she added.

"AGEs are higher in any kind of meat, but especially in ground meat," she said. "If you put hamburgers or brats on the grill, you'll likely have a higher AGEs content than if you chose a whole cut of meat, say round steak or chicken," said Chapman-Novakofski.

Boiling or stewing meat would reduce your AGEs intake further. And scrambling an egg with cooking spray instead of frying it leads to a significant reduction in AGEs, she added.

The scientists said more research is needed before definite recommendations can be made. They are planning another study in which they'll examine past AGEs intake of diabetes patients.

"These findings are preliminary, but they give us ample reason to further explore the association between AGEs and cardiovascular risk among people with diabetes," Chapman-Novakofski noted.

The study is available online in the International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition. Co-authors are Claudia Luevano-Contreras of the University of Illinois and Eugenia Garay-Sevilla and Monica Preciado-Puga of the University of Guanajuato, Mexico. Partial funding was provided by the National Council for Science and Technology of Mexico (CONACYT).

Obama, Romney cram foreign policy for last debate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One day out from their last debate, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are cramming foreign policy and taking a rare break from swing-state campaigning.

Monday's face-off in Boca Raton, Fla., represents one of the last major opportunities for Obama and Romney to capture the attention of millions of voters ? especially that small but sought-after group of voters who haven't yet made up their minds.

Obama was holed up in Camp David in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he arrived Friday to prep for the debate, a 90-minute encounter focused on international affairs. With him at the presidential retreat were a band of top advisers including National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, campaign strategist David Axelrod and White House senior adviser David Plouffe.

Romney planned to spend the weekend in Florida, continuing intensive preparation that has consumed large amounts of his time in recent weeks.

Foreign policy has surfaced as a prominent issue in the waning weeks of the race, elevated by a deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and a restive situation in Syria. Although polls show voters continue to prioritize economic issues, both candidates are aggressively pitching themselves as more competent to be commander in chief.

In an unusually quiet day on the campaign trail, Romney running mate Paul Ryan was the only candidate to be out in front of voters. The Wisconsin congressman plans two events Sunday in Iowa, including one in Sioux City with country singer Mark Wills, plus an evening rally in Colorado.

Still, with a tight race closing in, neither Romney nor Obama can afford more than a few days away from the handful of states that will decide the winner.

Obama planned a whirlwind excursion starting after Monday's debate. Events Tuesday in Florida and Ohio will be followed by around-the-clock campaigning Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Then on to Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; and Cleveland on Thursday, when Obama will also return home to Chicago to vote early as part of the campaign's push for early and absentee voting.

In a sign that the candidates' time has become the most precious commodity, Obama's aides said he planned to sleep Wednesday night aboard Air Force One and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops.

Testing Interest

Hey there!

Right now I'm testing to see how many people would be interested in a Halo RP. With Halo 4 right around the corner I expect a lot of Halo fans to be excited and maybe willing to participate in a Halo RP.

As a fan, and not a buff, I will need a Co-GM who knows Halo like the back of their hand to help me get facts, details and locations to be as accurate as possible for the RP. If I'm going to make an RP based on the Halo franchise, I want it to be as authentic to the original material as possible so that fans and buffs alike could participate and enjoy the experience.

That being said, again this post is just a test to see how many people would be interested in an RP of this nature.

The basic idea of the RP would take place right after the events of Halo Reach. A team of SPARTANS, designated Itsoh Team (in partial reference to the Navajo Indian word for "Wolf"), is en route to *insert planet here* to try and contain a Covenant takeover operation. As we progress through the RP we'll encounter more and more Covenant forces as well as the Flood on other planets.

Again, I'll need a Co-GM who knows Halo very well in order to make this fun. Though the basic idea for the story is rather simple, there's going to be A LOT of combat and stress for us to go through together so buckle up and prepare for head throbbing and stomach churning action!

So do I have your attention yet?

If I can find four players to say they're interested on this thread then I will create the RP. If you are interested please describe for me your experience with Halo so that I know who to choose for a Co-GM from those who show up here.

Thanks for your time, and I hope that I can find a few people willing to help me get this started!

5.3-magnitude quake, aftershocks rattle Calif.

SALINAS, Calif. (AP) ? A moderate earthquake and minor aftershocks jolted the central California coast over the weekend but didn't cause any damage, authorities said.

Nearly 6,700 people reported feeling the magnitude 5.3-quake when it struck late Saturday outside of King City, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its website.

USGS geophysicist Don Blakeman said the temblor struck in a "seismically active area" near the San Andreas Fault, about 90 miles southeast of San Jose. It was followed by at least four aftershocks that were greater than magnitude 2.5.

The area where the quake hit is a mostly rural area of rolling hills with large farms and ranches.

A magnitude 5-quake is capable of causing damage ? most often knocking things off shelves and making moderate cracks in walls and foundations, the USGS said. The sheriff departments for Monterey and nearby San Luis Obispo counties said they received calls about the earthquake but no reports of damage.

Far to the north, a minor earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.5 rattled an area 15 miles east of Eureka, USGS said. Eureka police said no damage or injuries were reported.

The quake near Eureka was not related to the ones near King City, Blakeman said.

?SNL? spoofs second presidential debate (VIDEO)

As was the case with the first two debates of the 2012 presidential race, last week's town hall at Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long Island, was spoofed on "Saturday Night Live." And the debate--the second between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney--was portrayed as a contentious affair in front of a raucous New York crowd.

After President Obama (played by Jay Pharoah) was asked to disclose his presidential salary, Jason Sudeikis' Romney pounced.

"Four-hundred-thousand? That's what I pay my cats," Romney said. "Why don't you go sit down before I beat you to death with my paycheck."

"This isn't Colorado any more, governor," Pharoah said, mocking his Obama's sleepy performance at the first presidential debate in Denver. "This is sea level."

[Related: 'SNL' skewers VP debate (VIDEO)]

The nervous, undecided voters that made up the town hall were also spoofed. Tom Hanks portrayed one in a surprise cameo, offering a one-word question: Libya.

The highlight of the debate--when moderator Candy Crowley challenged Romney's assertion that President Obama did not call the attack in Benghazi a terrorist act--was sent-up, too.

"Candy, c'mon Candy," Romney pleaded as President Obama dropped the mic.

On "Weekend Update," the campaign provided more joke fodder.

"A new Gallup poll shows that Mitt Romney now has a 7 point lead on President Obama," Seth Meyers said. "That's right, Romney leads by 7 points among people who still answer landline calls from a blocked number."

Meyers also mocked President Obama's latest celebrity endorser: reality TV star Honey Boo Boo

"I knew Obama was pro-birth control," Meyers said, "but I didn't know birth control was pro-Obama."

Love in the hunt at his own tournament

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) ? Davis Love III might have found the perfect tonic for any Ryder Cup hangover ? playing golf, and playing well on a Sea Island course he knows better than anyone.

In his third straight tournament since his U.S. team lost a big lead on the final day at Medinah, Love hit a 6-iron to 3 feet on the 17th hole that put him in the final group going into the weekend at the McGladrey Classic, where he is becoming more than just a tournament host.

Love was one shot behind Arjun Atwal, who is running out of time to keep his PGA Tour card. Atwal made an adjustment in his putting stroke earlier in the week and watched it pay off in a big way at Sea Island for a 63, his best score of the year.

Atwal, whose two-year exemption from winning in Greensboro, N.C., expires this year, is No. 175 on the money list and has only two tournaments left to finish in the top 125. He opened with three straight birdies and took the outright lead with a wedge into 5 feet on the fifth hole, his 14th of the round.

"I'm in a desperate situation," Atwal said. "I got no choice ? either win or finish in the top two. So I've just got to grind it out."

Atwal was at 10-under 130, though this tournament has a distinct Ryder Cup feel going into the final two days.

It starts with Love, the American captain, who moved to Sea Island when he was 14. What helped more than his course knowledge was switching to a belly putter that doesn't quite reach his belly, and not even his shirt "unless it's untucked." Brian Bateman, who is much shorter than Love, once used it as a belly putter and Love figures the fact that it's a heavy club and has a different look could only help him.

"I've been messing around with this putter for well over a year, I just haven't had the nerve to put it in play," Love said. "But I had two pro-ams this week so I said, 'This is the best time ? my home greens, two pro-ams on my home course.' So I tried it out and the first day I used it, I made eight birdies. So it worked."

Love was tied with Jim Furyk, who hasn't played since his bogey-bogey finish in the Ryder Cup and is making his final PGA Tour appearance of the year. Furyk was plodding along Sea Island, a few birdies on his card, when he rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on the 14th, converted a two-putt birdie from 100 feet away just off the green, and made a third straight birdie on the 16th from about 12 feet. He wound up with a 65.

"I felt a little rusty on the way in," Furyk said. "I have a lot of confidence in my ball striking right now, but when you don't play a lot, sometimes it's the course management, making the good decisions. And so far that's all kind of coming back to me slowly and I've kind of gained momentum as the last two rounds have gone on."

David Toms was tied with them until he made bogey on the final hole for a 67, though he was still only two shots out of the lead. Bud Cauley, who shared the first-round lead, wasn't as crisp with his irons and had to settle for a 70. He also was two behind, still in great shape as he pursues his first PGA Tour win. Gavin Coles joined them at 132 after six birdies in a round of 65.

Despite all the familiarity at the top of the leaderboard, the McGladrey Classic remained wide open.

The cut was at 1-under 209, meaning all 88 players were within nine shots of the lead.

There has been very little wind along the South Carolina coast, and while the weather has been mild and dry, enough rain has fallen in the early morning hours that the greens remained soft. Love hit one 7-iron that plugged in its pitch mark.

Such ideal conditions allowed just about everyone to stay in the game.

Chad Campbell, who hit all 18 greens in regulation, was among those at 7-under 133, while Vijay Singh (68) and Jason Day (67) were four shots behind.

Atwal struggled with a bad back early in the year when he opened the season by missing the cut in seven straight tournaments, one of them while playing in the same group with Tiger Woods at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. His chronic left knee is acting up now and he expects to have tests on it at the end of the year.

All he cares about now is getting a card for next year, a position with which he is familiar.

Two years ago, Atwal had to go through Monday qualifying for the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, and then he shot a 61 on his way to his lone PGA Tour victory. He recalls one year on the Nationwide Tour when he won late in the season to finish in the top 25 and earn back his tour card.

More than injuries, he felt he spent too much time getting technical with his swing after changing coaches, and it took him until June before he stopping thinking and starting playing. He started making cuts, but he didn't make up much ground.

Love doesn't have to worry about his card, as a lifetime member with his 20 wins. The trick for the 48-year-old Love is to finish, which has been a problem this year amid all his Ryder Cup captaincy duties. But this would be a good place for that to change, on his home course and playing before hundreds of fans at a tournament that doesn't attract a big crowd. Love put on a show by making simple birdies on both par 5s and stuffing that 6-iron into tap-in range on the 17th.

Love isn't the least bit surprised. He was eager to get back to golf after the Ryder Cup and found he was throwing away too many shots in Las Vegas and California. Even on Friday, he twice made bogey with a wedge in his hand.

But he's only one shot back going into the weekend, and he has reason to hope that instead of giving out the trophy this year, he can take it.

"I'm hitting the ball real well," he said. "I wouldn't say I've gotten everything out of the day. But it's my home course, and I know my way around it. So hopefully, I can keep it going."
