Performing Arts Committee seeks elves for Festival of Trees | Sun ...

RUMFORD ? The Performing Arts Committee began their final preparations for the upcoming Festival of Trees Tuesday night at the Municipal Building.

Committee Chairman Jim Rinaldo said that the Performing Arts Committee has ?got everything pretty well nailed down? for the Dec. 8 festival, which will be held in the Rumford Falls Auditorium at 6 p.m. He pointed out that while Santa, Mrs. Claus, Frosty and the Christmas Panda will be there for the children, there is a shortage of elves.

?Any children who would like to come to the Festival of Trees in costume, as an elf, are more than welcome,? committee member Kim Sequoia said.

?Striped socks, elf hat, that sort of thing,? Rinaldo added.

The committee also discussed the different residents who will be performing at the festival. The performances will begin with the Rumford Association for the Advancement of the Performing Arts, followed by a reading of ?T'was the Night Before Christmas? by committee member Mitzi Sequoia. After the reading, a variety of musicians will perform, including residents Melanie Jordan, Fawn Maness, Andy St. Pierre and Tia Dunn.

Rinaldo said that there will be no entrance fee, though a donation jar will be set up at the door.

The committee reported that trees decorated by the Lithuanian Heritage Club, Rumford Historical Society, Rumford Quilters, RAAPA, Lennox Capital Management and Amato's have been entered into the festival so far. Rinaldo said that the Performing Arts Committee is still accepting applications for sponsors who want to enter the competition.

?All you need to do to enter is fill out an application, which you can get at the town hall or on the Rumford town website, and decorate your own artificial tree,? Rinaldo said.

He added that Town Manager Carlo Puiia expects a new sound system to be installed in the auditorium in time for the festival, although if it's not installed by Dec. 8, the committee will use the Rumford Public Library's sound system as a back-up.
