Op-Ed: International Marine Animal Trainers Association code of ...

The International Marine Animal Trainers Association's (IMATA) claims it opposes the Japanese drive fisheries. Yet on closer inspection several of its members are marine parks and employees who glean their animals directly from the drive hunts.
Formed in 1972, the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) was founded to serve marine mammal science through training, public display, research, husbandry, conservation, and education. The organization states that it clearly opposes the Japanese dolphin drives that occur in Taiji every year between Sept. and March, but does it?

In these drives, pods of dolphins are driven into a natural inlet where a select few are chosen for captivity, and the remainder are slaughtered for meat. It is a practice that has been occurring in Taiji since the 1970s, originally for meat and then for profit. These drives have a history that speaks for itself.

Until 1978, dolphin hunting in Japan had largely gone unnoticed until photos of a slaughter at Iki Island in 1979 hit newspapers around the world. It was an event that grabbed the attention of Hardy Jones, a marine mammal advocate from the conservation group Blue Voice.

In 1980, Jones and cameraman Howard Hall, went to the Island and "walked into a massacre" of almost 2,000 dolphins. Footage captured of the slaughter, was beamed around the world sparking massive protests to Japanese embassies.

The slaughter at Iki Island occurred under the mistaken belief that dolphins were competition for fish, and must be slaughtered for the benefit of fishermen. But the game really began to change in 1990, when Jones filmed a group of Americans wrestling Risso's dolphins in Taiji harbor. These dolphins ? transported from Taiji and shipped to Hawaii, were absorbed into the U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program.

Nine years on in Futo, Japan, the capture of 100 bottlenose dolphins at Futo Bay changed the game once more. Six young mammals were wrestled into slings and sold to aquarium representatives. Many dolphins drowned in the nets, but the captive few created a new incentive ? profit. In his documentary When Dolphins Cry, Jones confirms that a market had now been established, a lucrative demand for dolphins driven by money. Until the Futo Bay incident, there were "indications that the drive hunts were becoming a dying practice," said Sakae Hemmi of Japan's Elsa Nature Conservancy. In the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society's publication, "Driven by Demand," Hemmi explained:
The US Marine Mammal Inventory Report (MMIR) records the Miami Seaquarium, Sea Life Park in Hawaii, the Indianapolis Zoo, Sea World Inc. and the US Navy as having imported live cetaceans from Japan.
By purchasing these dolphins, US marine facilities provided the drives with the financial incentive needed to continue the hunts. In a Frontline special on PBS called "A Whale of a Business", Jim McBain the Director of Veterinary Service at SeaWorld Inc., even answered questions about the animals that SeaWorld acquired from drive fisheries:
In our collection right now, we have false killer whales. And three of the animals came from drive fisheries, one of them came from a drive fishery that went to the Indianapolis Zoo on a permit, the animals now in our park on a breeding loan. We've had two offspring from that group, so there's six total ... over the years there have others that have been in part of the collection, sure, that passed away.
When pushed directly for some kind of total number of animals acquired from the drives, Bain replied, "There's been 15 total. 'Course that information is public information through the National Fisheries Service. It's not like it's a secret that SeaWorld has." This might also explain why author David Kirby believes that SeaWorld still refuses to irrefutably condemn the Taiji dolphin drives. "SeaWorld says Taiji's hunt is 'horrible,' said Kirby recently in an article published at TakePart.com, "but won't condemn other dolphinariums that source their cetaceans from the Cove," he added. The author of the newly released book, Death at SeaWorld, said that indeed SeaWorld was not the least bit concerned about its past involvement in the Taiji dolphin drives. In fact, Kirby cited company spokesman Fred Jacobs' following statement on the dolphin drives:
We stopped [buying] and have not resumed, not because we are ashamed, but it was not something that we cared to be involved with any more.
Although "no cetaceans captured in Japan are known to have been imported into the US since 1993," explained Hemmi, the practice appeared to halt only after the "US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) denied Marine World Africa USA a permit to import four false killer whales from Japan. The reason given was ?serious concerns whether the collection/take of animals through a drive fishery operation is [was] humane." This move by NMFS may have put the kibosh on any future US imports of marine mammals caught in drive fisheries, but it also inferred that aquariums withdrew from the drives less by "choice" and more because hands were forced. Today the drive hunts still continue for six months of every year, although only Taiji now actively supplies marine mammals to international parks. Pressure to end the drives has continued to come from several dedicated conservation groups, but it was the release of the 2009 Academy Award-winning documentary, The Cove, that truly rallied the public. The movie, produced by Louis Psihoyos, followed an elite team of activists from Save Japan Dolphins as they embarked on a covert mission to reveal the ongoing dolphin slaughter in Taiji. The film, like Jones' documentary had, once again clearly linked the drives to profit. As pressure mounted, organizations that endorsed public display were forced to make a stand against the hunts. One of these organizations was IMATA, who in May 2006 posted this statement on their website:
The IMATA Board approved the following position which supports the termination of drive fisheries. IMATA, the International Marine Animal Trainers Association takes a strong position on the Japanese drive fisheries, which are debated frequently internationally. IMATA condemns the inhumane killing of dolphins and other cetaceans in the Japanese drive fisheries. IMATA members care deeply about dolphins and whales. Our mission and our work every day is to connect people and whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals to foster understanding, caring and respect, and to help preserve and protect their ocean environments.
IMATA's code of ethics also stipulate:
Members of this Association, specifically, must maintain the fortitude and insight necessary to demonstrate a sense of responsibility, beyond reproach, within the principles of professionalism dictated by morality, logic, and knowledge. These are the qualities to which the Association and every member of the marine animal community must aspire.
Further requirements for membership spelled out by IMATA, also says that members should be:
Aware of the inherent need to maintain a positive image in the eye of the public-at-large; and to better prepare its members to act as ambassadors of the marine mammal community. The highest standards of ethical conduct are expected of the members of this Association at all times in all places.
Finally, it concluded that members must be committed to:
Exercising the highest levels of respect and humaneness for all animals.
This last sentence is one worth noting considering several members of IMATA are from Japan who sources many of its marine mammals via Taiji. These aquariums include: Awashima Marine Park; Enoshima Aquarium Marineland; Kamogawa Sea World; Niigata City Aquarium; Okinawa Marine Research Center; Minato-ku; Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium and Shimonoseki Marine Science Museum. Awashima Marine Park sources 100% of its marine mammals from Taiji; Enoshima has at least five wild captures from Taiji along with several captive born mammals. There is also one wild caught false killer whale and some Risso's and Pacific white-sided dolphins of unknown origin. Kamogawa has a mixture of rescued marine mammals, captive births and wild caught animals; Niigata City Aquarium mammals are all wild caught; Okinawa, has two pantropical dolphins and at least one Risso, all wild caught. They did have some captive births but none survived. For the remaining facilities it is more of the same; a mix of captive births and a few rescues, with the majority of animals sourced from wild captures. But IMATA also has members from the country of China, and China is, according to Elsa Nature Conservancy, one of the largest foreign importers of dolphins captured directly from the Taiji dolphin drives. Beijing Aquarium for example, which sometimes acts as a kind of clearing house for marine mammals coming into the country, has imported many animals directly from Taiji. Untitled

image:126694:0::0

Angel, Beauty, Little Chi, Princess and Water Girl were all captured in Japan in Feb. 2003 and transferred to Beijing Aquarium on March 20 2003. This was reported by the Beijing Post. On Dec. 16 2009, another six dolphins arrived from Taiji. Video of their transfer is provided by Beijing TV. At Guangzhou Ocean World, four female bottlenose dolphins arrived from Japan on July 20, 2007. The list is endless and ongoing. In fact, data gathered by Elsa Nature Conservancy between 2002-2008 from documents by the Trade Statistics of Japan issued by the Financial Bureau, the Taiji Town Assembly and correspondence with Taiji Town, show that China purchased 99 dolphins from Taiji. And over the following three years: 2009; 2010 and 2011, China imported yet another 117 dolphins all sourced from Taiji's Cove. Just this year for example, Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park imported six Risso's dolphins from Taiji; these were transferred on Jun 17, 2012. Ocean Park employs seven people who are members of IMATA.

Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park

Six Risso's dolphins were imported from Taiji to China just this year. These dolphins were purchased by a facility that has members in IMATA.

image:126695:0::0

But it doesn't end there. Dolphins Pacific in Palau (of whom two employees are members of IMATA), imported 11 dolphins from Taiji in 2001 according to CITES Trade data. Taiwanese facilities which actually hold "organizational membership" in IMATA, have also imported dolphins from Taiji. And in Hawaii, a single false killer whale captured in the drives, is the only surviving animal in the US from a drive fishery; her name is "Kina." IMATA, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, held its first ever workshop for experienced trainers courtesy of the Navy Marine Mammal Program in San Diego, California. Its third Marine Mammal Trainer Workshop was hosted by Marine World Africa USA. Its second annual conference was hosted by SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida ? the same facilities that Elsa holds partially accountable for the continuation of the drives. So when IMATA says it condemns the inhumane killing of dolphins and other cetaceans in the Japanese drive fisheries, and that its members must be "beyond reproach" or exercise "the highest levels of respect and humaneness for all animals," don't believe it for a minute. In condemning the dolphins drives, but endorsing members who source their animals from Taiji, IMATA may not directly have the blood of thousands of marine mammals on their hands, but they are certainly stained by it. Oh and its 40th annual conference which will be held in December this year? It should come of no great surprise to learn it will be hosted by Ocean Park in Hong Kong, China.

Egyptian leftist leader eyes parliament majority

CAIRO (Reuters) - Popular Egyptian leftist politician and former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahy said on Saturday he is confident a coalition of leftist groups he is working to unite will be strong enough to defeat Islamists and win a parliament majority.

Sabahy, in an unexpected outcome, came in third place in the first round of the presidential vote last May, behind well-known army commander and politician Ahmed Shafik and current president Mohamed Mursi, who was the candidate of the state's most organized Muslim Brotherhood group.

Ten other candidates including two seen as front-runners trailed Sabahy, who had later turned down an offer by Mursi to become his vice president.

The almost-always smiling, populist succeeded in attracting millions of supporters moved by his promises to promote social justice, a fairer distribution of wealth and the elimination of poverty.

With a parliamentary vote expected before the end of the year, Sabahy is building on his gains from the presidential race and working to form a strong, organized bloc to run for parliament.

"We are seeking a national gathering of groups that share our goals of social justice but not necessarily our exact ideologies, and with that we will get a majority in parliament," Sabahy said in an interview with Reuters on Saturday night.

Sabahy said his front could include liberal groups and individuals who agree to his social justice program, but when asked if the front was also open to Islamists, the answer was an outright "no." "And certainly," he added, it "would not include the (Brotherhood's) Freedom and Justice Party and its allies."

Islamists won around 70 percent in the first parliament, formed earlier this year after the state's popular uprising, which ousted former president Hosni Mubarak last year. The parliament was dissolved last June after a court ruled the laws upon which the election was based were unconstitutional.

According to Sabahy, Islamists are a minority in Egypt and their sweeping victory in politics over the past year and half after the anti-Mubarak revolt is due to their strong organizational and grassroots skills, which he said is working to emulate in his new liberal front.

"This front will end the contradiction that is happening in Egypt now with the organized minority acquiring the majority in parliament, and the presidency, while the divided majority hold a minority in parliament," Sabahy said.

MIXED ECONOMIC SYSTEM

Sabahy has recently founded the leftist Public Current movement but says he does not seek to revive old socialist economic policies like nationalization of private industries.

He has called for a system that combines public and private sector elements on the condition that it serves all the people and not just wealthy shareholders.

"For Egypt to achieve what it needs and deserves of an economic renaissance it needs a joint system between socialism and the free market economy," said the leftist, whose political career started when he was a student leader in the seventies.

Egypt's economy has suffered deeply after last year's populist uprising and the government is now in talks over a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Sabahy is a staunch follower of Egypt's former socialist president Gamal Abdel Nasser, a popular pan-Arab-leader who had a powerful popularity base among Egyptians and Arabs in the 1950s and '60s but was hated by the West for his opposition to Israel, with which he fought two wars in 1956 and 1967.

"Without Nasser I would not have been sitting here with you as I am the son of a peasant and I was supposed to only be a peasant like my father except for Nasser, whose experience has formed a big middle-class sector which is important for the preservation of the state's economy and modesty."

Egypt's middle-class diminished during Mubarak's time, as his economic policies were focused on the ruling elite. Sabahy said he does not see a change in those policies under the newly elected Islamist president.

"We are preserving the same economic policies of Mubarak's regime but with a religious flavor. ... The two systems are capitalist," he said.

"Egypt needs work on its poorest sectors and that is what the new president has not worked on or said he would work on," Sabahy said, drawing a contrast between the early days of the Mursi and Nasser administrations.

Nasser also came to power after a revolution in 1952, led by the military against the monarchy.

"After 45 days of Nasser's rule, he raised the minimum wage and redistributed agricultural lands, policies that created the biggest middle-class group in Egypt's history and its lowest unemployment rate," Sabahy said.

Around 40 percent of Egyptians are currently either poor, uneducated or both - and millions are unemployed.

EVALUATING MURSI

Other than a slight development in the state's security system, which suffered badly after the uprising, Sabahy sees no other progress since Mursi took office on June 30.

"There is a big gap between the Egyptian dreams in social justice and the way of thinking of this elected president, who is more loyal to his group and its economic pattern," he said.

"The millions of the Egyptians who took to the streets were Muslims and Christians seeking justice, dignity, modern education, work opportunities and fair wages and taxes. Such concepts are neither apparent in the work of this president and his government until now, nor present in his future program."

According to Sabahy, "revolutionary measures" are needed in order for people to feel real change.

Sabahy's history in the opposition dates back to the days of Nasser's successor, Anwar Sadat, a pro-Western capitalist, a position he also maintained in the Mubarak years. Mubarak was deposed on February 11 of last year after ruling for 30 years.

He publicly attacked Sadat at a university conference, earning him later exclusion from any post as a university lecturer or in government.

And despite his strong participation in the 18-day-protests that ousted Mubarak, Sabahy's opposition status did not end but was extended under Islamist rule.

"I am against using religion in politics and hence I will remain an opponent to Islamists but a decent opponent who would criticize their policies and run against them in elections but not ban or fight their existence," he said.

Asked if he would be willing to run for the presidency again, he said: "Only if there were a national demand for that. My performance in the last elections is not an open-ended license for me to run unless it was needed and requested." (Reporting by Yasmine Saleh; editing by Todd Eastham)

Realscreen's Doc Hot Shots 2012 ? Realscreen

Realscreen's Doc Hot Shots 2012

To celebrate realscreen?s 15th anniversary, we?ve selected 15 emerging directors (or directing teams) that we think represent the future of feature-length non-fiction.

In making the selections, we assembled an all-star team of top-level festival programmers and TV commissioners, and asked them to pick their stars of tomorrow.

Who is the next Pennebaker, we demanded, or the new Herzog? Which directing duo could go on to match the feats of the Maysles, and which provocateur could reach the heights of Morris or Moore?

The discussions were passionate, and for most of the judging panel (listed at the bottom of the page), whittling their shortlist down to just one director or duo was agonizing. So a big thank-you to all our judges, and massive congratulations to all of the 2012 Doc Hot Shots who made the list, which follows below in alphabetical order?

?

MALIK BENDJELLOUL (Sweden)

Malik Bendjelloul

Notable work: Searching for Sugar Man

David Courier, Sundance Film Festival senior programmer: ?Searching for Sugar Man trumpets the arrival of a major new voice in non-fiction film. Bendjelloul?s film is so much stranger than fiction it?s hard to believe that it actually happened. As plot twists abound, Sugar Man dazzles at every turn. This is that rare documentary for wide audiences ? a film for anyone who believes in second chances, for anyone who believes in the power of music to overcome the obstacles of time and space.?

?

MARGARET BROWN (U.S.)

Margaret Brown

Notable work: Be Here to Love Me, The Order of Myths

Janet Pierson, SXSW Film producer: ?Taking a longer view of who our future doc masters will be, rather than working from this year?s festival debuts, I?d like to nominate Margaret Brown, who combines a unique and cinematic filmmaking voice with deeply moving stories. Her approach is intimate, her sensibility poetic with gravitas. The films have a timeless feel that get under our skin.?

?

ASIF KAPADIA (UK)

Asif Kapadia

Notable work: Senna, The Odyssey

Adam Benzine, realscreen associate editor: ?Kapadia?s doc debut burst onto the world stage last year, staggering audiences globally by bringing a high drama approach to archival storytelling. Asif already had form as a narrative director prior to Senna?s success (which included BAFTA and Sundance wins), and hopefully his recent Olympics doc The Odyssey indicates a willingness to further explore the non-fiction format. If so, great things undoubtedly await.?

?

ANDRIS GAUJA (Latvia)

Andris Gauja

Notable work: Family Instinct, Victor

Doug Jones, Los Angeles Film Festival associate director of programming: ?Many filmmakers are exploring the boundaries of documentary filmmaking, but few are approaching it with the fearlessness of Gauja. In his debut film Family Instinct, a disarmingly raw portrait of a dysfunctional family and their community of misfits and malcontents, Gauja employs a variety of methods ? pure documentary, recreations, staged events in which only some of the participants are aware of any staging ? to create a tightwire act of fact, fiction and the revelatory space in between.?

?

HAVANA MARKING (UK)

Havana Marking

Notable work: Afghan Star, Smash & Grab ? The Story of the Pink Panthers

Nick Fraser, BBC ?Storyville? series editor: ?She?s very, very talented. She made Afghan Star, and she?s developing two new ideas for us. Smash & Grab was a big, well-made film with a lot of animation in it, which was really deft, really good.?

?

SARAH MCCARTHY (Australia)

Sarah McCarthy

Notable work: Sound of Mumbai: A Musical

Thom Powers, TIFF doc programmer and DOC NYC artistic director: ?With Sound of Mumbai, Sarah McCarthy didn?t make anything easy on herself, filming with Indian slum children putting on a production of The Sound of Music. Up until the night of the one-time-only performance, she wasn?t sure whether she?d have permission to film it. But the results are triumphant, one of the most emotionally charged films I?ve ever shown. In fact, just thinking about it now makes me choke up.?

?

ELIZABETH MIMS AND JASON TIPPET (U.S.)

Elizabeth Mims and Jason Tippet

Notable work: Only the Young

Simon Kilmurry, ?POV? executive director: ?Elizabeth and Jason have achieved something remarkable in Only the Young, transporting us into the lives of their teen characters, where it feels like we are quite literally there, hanging out with them, at that point in time when our lives stretched endlessly and uncertainly into the future. As filmmakers they have a freshness of vision that is exhilarating to witness, and a talent for storytelling that is both incisive and humble. Watching this film has been one of the great artistic highlights of 2012.?

?

CAMILLA NIELSSON (Denmark)

Camilla Nielsson

Notable work: The Children of Darfur, Mumbai Disconnected

Mette Hoffmann Meyer, DRTV head of documentaries: ?Camilla is very bright, and has a fantastic understanding of the complexity of politics and people. She?s also very brave, and in a very short period of time has taught herself to use cameras and get closer to the story. Her work is beautifully shot, and the material she?s coming home with from Zimbabwe [for a future doc] comes from a place that?s really very difficult to shoot.?

?

LISANNE PAJOT AND JAMES SWIRSKY (Canada)

Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky

Notable work: Indie Game: The Movie

Hussain Currimbhoy, Sheffield Doc/Fest film programmer: ?Lisanne and James immediately sucked me into a world I knew nothing about with brilliant editing and an excellent eye for cinematography and pacing that outdoes far more seasoned filmmakers. They then took me on a rollercoaster ride I was not at all expecting, and I loved every minute of it. In a world where control over your content is fractious, these filmmakers did it on their own terms using all modern tools at their disposal to make the film a reality.?

?

V?R?NA PARAVEL (France)

Verena Paravel

Notable work: Foreign Parts, Leviathan

Benjamin Fowlie, Camden International Film Festival founder and director: ?Part anthropologist, part filmmaker, V?r?na has created films that transcend our notions of what documentary is, and what it is supposed to be. Beginning with Foreign Parts, she has emphasized the immersive, experiential qualities of the moving image, eschewing both narration and conventional narrative. Her latest collaborative project with Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Leviathan, pushes the limits of documentary even further.?

?

TRISTAN PATTERSON (U.S.)

Tristan Patterson

Notable work: Dragonslayer

Basil Tsiokos, Sundance Film Festival programming associate, documentary features: ?In Dragonslayer, director Tristan Patterson and producer John Baker were able to almost instinctively adapt the form of documentary portraiture to perfectly suit their untraditional subject and capture a specific, pivotal moment in his life. If they can bring the same kind of unmediated authenticity and immediacy to their next project, they?ll certainly remain high on everyone?s watch list.?

?

DAWN PORTER (U.S.)

Dawn Porter

Notable work: Gideon?s Army, Spies of Mississippi

Lois Vossen, senior producer for PBS?s ?Independent Lens?: ?Dawn?s varied professional background as an attorney and TV executive provides a unique skill set that serves an independent filmmaker? Her experiences as an attorney give her practical insight into the ever-more-complicated legal side of the business, while her connection to storytelling makes her a great creative partner. She has a strong understanding of what drives a great story forward.?

?

ASHLEY SABIN AND DAVID REDMON (U.S.)

Ashley Sabin and David Redmon

Notable work: Girl Model, Downeast

Sean Farnel, acquisitions consultant at SnagFilms: ?Their work has a raw, but thoughtful quality, a willingness to experiment and play in the form, yet also a firm grasp of classical observational filmmaking. Smart, tough, but not preachy politically, these DIY-ers have also been astute and creative in managing the business life of their films. It?s clear that major works should be expected from them, individually and together, for years to come.?

?

BILL ROSS AND TURNER ROSS (U.S.)

Bill Ross and Turner Ross

Notable work: 45365, Tchoupitoulas

Charlotte Cook, Hot Docs director of programming: ?They are filmmakers who are developing a new, modern form of v?rit? that is a progression in the craft, and art form, of documentary. What makes their work so important is that it is not bound by present relevance, but that it will continue to gain nuance for decades due to the way in which they portray atmosphere and feeling, not only of place and culture, but of the people within.?

?

SEUNG-JUN YI (South Korea)

Seung-jun Yi

Notable work: Planet of Snail

Heather Croall, Sheffield Doc/Fest director: ?The most stunning documentary this year has to be Seung-Jun Yi?s Planet of Snail ? one of the most mesmerizing, life-affirming cinema experiences you will ever encounter. Seung-Jun Yi?s directorial touch is so masterful; he gently invites us into his deeply respectful portrayal of this amazing couple with a love story that is refreshing and fun but never sentimental, never maudlin. The light bulb scene in Planet of Snail has been burned into my mind forever.?

SS Bday Party Anxiety! UGHHHHH! | Step Talk

So....DH wants to throw his kid (SS11) a bday party at our house. I'm dreading every last second, detail and moment of this.

My hangups include but are not limited to:
I can't stand SS
I can't stand BM & some of her family members
I can't stand throwing parties
DH doesn't know sh*t about throwing a party

The thought of BM in my home for the first time ever to attend a bday party for HER bratty kid is apaulling to me. I don't want to do sh*t for this kid for his bday, he doesn't deserve a party, he gets bad grades, has behavioral problems and is selfish, nothing is ever good enough for him. This kid doesn't even acknowledge my existance or have any ounce of appreciation for what I do for him... the thought of wasting my afternoon working to celebrate this lil bastard is really killing me. DH is clueless when it comes to throwing parties which leaves most of the responsibility on me, because quite frankly BM isn't about to step into my house acting like she's hosting a party in my house. This whole thing sux major balls.

I had to have my bestie talk me off the anxiety cliff. She suggested that I devise a plan, clearly state my boundaries and limitations and just compromise and go thru with it for DH and do not look at it like Im doing it for SS. She said she would help me and that this is an opportunity for me to shine as a SM and show everyone (all the haters) that I have class and what kind of woman I am.

I guess that is a positive way of looking at it. I told DH that my personal requirment is that I be heavily medicated i.e. zanex, mj or vicodin. LOL! I also indicated that BM is NOT allowed to invite the entire world and that I'm not comfortable with strangers in my home. That she will be given a # of people she can invite and that its not negotiable.

I've attended a couple bday parties that BM has thrown for sk's and this trik is the type of broad who invites the entire ghetto a$$ football team of SS and all their scandalous overzealous parents and additional kids. They single handedly trashed BM's friends house where she threw SS party last time. I advised DH that it will not be that kind of party over here at my house! No kids inside the house! no going up stairs or running around the house, it must all stay outside unless for the bathroom. No one is allowed to go upstairs to play in the game room or bust out the xbox, PERIOD. also NO PINATA! SORRY, thats just more trash to pick up and I dont want a bunch tween boys with overloads of testosterone waiving a bat or wooden stick around anywhere in my yard! NO THANKS! Also his bratty kid will be home before and after the party to clean, set up, breakdown, and clean again!

UGHHHHH I HATE THIS! the only good thing about it is that this is the LAST kid bday party that will be thrown! The kids are all hitting their teens now and were done wit this crap! Don't get me wrong, I have a BS11 that I've thrown bday parties for, I Have been doing this for a long time and have it down to a science, I've thrown weddings, bacholorette, baby showers, bday, you name it. ITS A LOT OF WORK! A LOT! I don't mind putting in work for those that appreciate the time, money and effort that goes into pulling off a successful party, but for those who don't even respect me or acknowledge my existance, I have a hard time with this!

Being a minor and legally accepting payments online? - Web ...

I'm under 18, but I'm ready to start an online business - specifically a company that specializes in getting other young internet users their own custom websites.

I have the funds required to start such a business, but I'm worried about legally accepting payments online. My parents would be willing to sign off on anything, but not willing to use their own accounts for anything (eg. making their PayPal into a business account with their name on it) - don't ask me why, they just aren't willing to do that.

I already have a PayPal Student account, but from what I've read in their TOS and from other people online is that I can't operate a business with that account - that I run a high risk of being limited.

Does anyone have suggestions from payment processors that allow minors to take payments as a business? Thanks in advance

You might just have to wait until you're 18

You'll need to have a parent or legal guardian obtain the gateway accounts. The only way around this that I am aware of is to be emancipated, but you'd want to talk to an attorney and, honestly, I wouldn't recommend that route.

Since you are not 18 and assuming you are from USA , you can not legally sign any contract nor own any business. Thus you can not accept payment online ( and offline in various situation).
I would suggest you to hold onto your fund and wait till you are legally mature .

The way to do this is to have a legal entity.

Then you provide your business details, EIN etc. Certain areas allow states to be registered at lower age levels so just research.

Just find a place to register with no age req. =)

From what I hear you can do is to get your parents to register your business and you be the only employee of that until you're 18 when you'll then be legally allowed to "take over" the business.

Hm, perhaps I phrased my OP wrong. I don't really want to register an official business, but I want to be able to accept maybe 50 transactions a month, and then be able to use that money.

Is there a way I could do this by myself?

I would honestly recommend that you do register a business. Especially if you're selling something.

Would your parents not be happy about being the "account holder" for the PayPal account where from their it can be linked to your bank, card and what not?

Considering you would have to pay taxes etc. You should really know what you are doing. You could also be putting your parents in a liability situation.

Our 16 year old twin daughters and our 13 year old daughter own an internet radio station that's been in operation since 2004, previously owned by their older sisters that are now married.

They have a bank account with us as the co signers on the account. They also have a Paypal account that's in our names dba as the name of their radio station. They have a membership for their radio station based on membership donation.

Their mom and I control the finances of their business. For them to write a check one of us have to co sign the check. We've had no issues with them and with the profits they're making all of that is going into their college funds as a tax free investment.

The way we're handling things is teaching them they must take care of their money, run their business legally, cannot waste their money, accounting, banking and straight up business management.

If you're under the legal age to own a business then I would suggest you get some adult help and learn some smart business practices from them, or you may end up being an also ran and hiding from your clients.

Good luck on your business venture.

There is no such legal thing as an "unofficial" business. I don't know about other states, but in California, a minor cannot enter in to any legal contract without parental/guardian consent/co-sign, etc. My advice? Focus on school, go to a good college, wait to run your business. There is PLENTY of time to do that after doing the things you should do when you're young, like getting a degree. Get it done and out of the way.

@Danny247 - there are ways to do it but you will need the cooperation/assistance of a parent and/or guardian.

I tend to agree with the others though, I would wait until I was 18. Heck, when I was 10~12 I was dreaming of having my own servers colocated and starting my own hosting business... I know what it's like to want to do something and feeling that you can do it, but not legally being able to do it [at least, not easily].

I'm 26 going on 27 now, if that puts anything into perspective for you.

I often come down hard on stupid teens and their stupid "businesses".

For once, somebody is doing things the right way.

I think Bruc's is the best suggestion.

I don't know about now but I remember my mom opening my bank account in my name when I was 10 and I used that account until I was an adult.

I had all sorts of after school jobs and so forth from 14, cashing cheques, saving money, and being responsible. Do hard work, get paid, get what you want...although when I was 14 I didn't even know about BBS's yet, so times are a bit different. But I started investing into my prior business from 16 and turned it into a full time business when I was older.

Unless you (or your parents) have to something to hide, and since online businesses are a bit different and have the potential of all sorts of scams, going through your parents would be the best route. Look at it as 1 year training to get you on your own feet when you turn 18.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept review, specs ... - Auto Spectator

The Nissan TeRRA SUV concept, to be unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show on Sep 27, combines two outstanding Nissan strengths ? SUVs and EVs ? in a vehicle that is equally in its element off-road in the wild or gliding silently through a sophisticated urban setting.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

With an innovative 4x4 fuel-cell electric powertrain and an athletic exterior that projects an unforgettable presence beyond its compact dimensions, TeRRA takes sustainable motoring into exciting new territory.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Envisioned as "the one and only Zero Emission SUV," TeRRA builds on Nissan's success with urban-relevant SUVs and crossovers like Murano and Qashqai and asserts that its zero-emission expertise extends all the way to fuel cells. Designed as a functional and flexible choice for tomorrow's youthful, "always on" consumers, TeRRA answers their aspiration for eco-friendliness along with a secure driving feel under any road conditions.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

"Our challenge was to take Nissan's strength in SUVs and crossovers forward into the zero-emissions era, fuel cells being our new frontier in zero emission mobility" said Francois Bancon, Nissan's devision general manager of product strategy and planning. "Not big and tough for the desert, the aim was a new approach to SUVs that's relevant to urban life. The unique diagonal seating layout that offers an exciting driving experience thanks to exceptional visibility that creates a sense of being in control under any conditions."

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Tough on the outside, warm and welcoming within
"We took our inspiration from the lifestyles of youthful customers in Northern Europe," said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan senior vice president and chief creative officer. "We heard their aspiration for sustainable mobility that can take them anywhere they want to go."

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

"Exploring our imagination of that natural space with the exterior, we have redefined the power of the SUV heritage in a much more athletic way, one that expresses our vision of the zero emissions future," Nakamura said.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

"You have the big tires, high belt-line, thick pillars and thin side windows of the SUV vocabulary. But with a slender waist between pronounced fenders above the wheel arches, and a sculptured hood, we've created an 'Implied Structure' of musculature under the skin. Sharp corners, short overhangs and sculptured lamps contribute to a clean, confident stance. An aerodynamically flat body pan in an eye-catching color, protecting the full length of the underside, completes the image of what we call 'Modern Toughness.'"

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Open the door and exterior toughness gives way to a surprisingly warm and welcoming interior. The door panel is a sculpted fusion of blond wood trim and colored acrylic, layered in an intriguing pattern. Ringing the cabin at shoulder height is a metal frame that gives TeRRA's occupants a feeling of security. The wood/metal contrast continues across the dashboard, a beechwood-acrylic fusion that exudes a soft warmth. On the driver's side, the steering and instrument console gently tapers out toward the driver, barely interrupting the clean lines of the dash.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

Seamless digital space?
Facing the driver is a unique instrument cluster. It's an electronic tablet ? just like today's popular portable devices ? that serves as an "intelligent key." The driver docks it when entering the car and removes it when leaving. When docked in TeRRA, the tablet's default view displays speed and other key performance indicators. But the driver can easily toggle to entertainment, communications, navigation and other views. Outside the car it provides all the functions we expect from a tablet, plus it stays continually in touch with the vehicle. The idea is seamless information and communication, on the road and everywhere else.

?offers a fresh perspective on the road
TeRRA's seamlessly connected driver sits front and almost center in a unique diagonal layout that positions rear passengers over the shoulders of those in front, rather than directly behind.

"For the driver to be nearly centered, not seated off to one side, provides a fresh, enlightened perspective with exceptional visibility," Nakamura said. "The diagonal layout allows all passengers to share the vision of adventures up ahead."

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

The seats themselves express a hexagonal motif that is carried through various aspects of the design. Fold the three passenger seats down and you notice that TeRRA's cabin deck is completely flat, presenting no obstacles to carrying bikes, kayaks or assemble-yourself furniture from Scandinavia. This flat surface is a function of the remarkably compact powertrain package that creates the possibility of this zero-emission concept.

Power, four-by-four; emissions, zero
Although TeRRA is presented as a design concept, not a technical exhibit, its proposed 4x4 fuel cell electric powertrain is far from imaginary.

Powering the front wheels is the electric propulsion system currently featured in the Nissan LEAF. In each back wheel, providing all-wheel power as needed, is an in-wheel electric motor, based on the working prototypes featured in three successive PIVO concepts. As no drive shafts are required to power the rear wheels, there is no hump in the cabin floor or on the underbody. This allows for the flat cabin deck and the underside bodypan.

Under the hood is ample space for Nissan's proprietary hydrogen fuel cell stack: a flat, highly compact unit that features world-leading power density of 2.5kW/L. The latest in a series of Nissan fuel cells since 1996, the stack costs just one-sixth of its 2005 predecessor as the need for expensive precious metals has been slashed to one-quarter of the previous level.

2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo2012 Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept photo

TeRRA is purely a concept car, but it signals that Nissan is ready to mass-produce fuel cell electric vehicles whenever hydrogen becomes widely available.
